You would have to grow it as a container plant so you could save it from your weather. A hard freezer would do it in. Note mine too is in a container.

I finially figured out that Spices don't need to be expensive. Nearly all are container items, I am here growing what could be an 70/80 foot tree. I have Rose Mary, I every year throw out some thyme somewhere. Last year I picked up the cayenne, I am actually looking at how I could grow black mustard and black pepper. These are things we just don't ever think about and we all know that fresher is better right. I would like to start different herbs/spices at different spots around the property. Then just let them naturally re-occour. You'd have to go to the ocean or a mine for salt but everything else grows. BTW we have both salt mines and the Gulf locally too.
It doesn't mean I have to use them, I can keep a can of watkins black pepper in the pantry, but I think have the option to experiment a little. Who knows, like everything else its probably just a passing fancy.

I like fresh, usually have planted here and there every year, Pots on the patio may be better. I bad about taking left over veggie plants and planting them in the wife's flower beds. Besides my main little garden I have stuff planted all over the yard.

I don't think the nursery has the Sweet Laurel in yet.I will get another and leave it in a pot.The one I had was over 7 feet tall.but I dried a lot of leaves before it died.

I have yet to get any onions up, soooooo....... Its gonna have to be container now, when I get a chance. I cheat about grass cutting, I have a 30 gallon tank DC powered sprayer on the neighbors 4X and spray all the concrete edges around the house, garage, barn, fence, drive & sidewalks. I bought a new week wacker 5 years ago, used it once! It does though sort of limit where and what I plant. Cause I can mix up a deadly poison to spray. It took out his old oak tree, but it won't kill blackberries but for a month or so.

I have been trying to start doing containers again, like I did in my youth. Easier to keep, portable, easier to work, and If by some act of god I had to move, I can take 'em with me. I keep looking at the roses and fruits and bulbs in the yard an think what a great deal someone will get one day.
AND the biggest thing about containers, I don't have to worry about my neighbor deciding to spray them....LOL
Great thread, Foam. I don't think there is anything I could do to keep a Bay tree alive here so I am very jealous.

I may not top dress it for awhile, Right now the potting soil is still a more hummus consistency and really hasn't compacted yet. Which is good because the Bay has loads of loose dirt to stretch its roots out in, with little resistance. Want to get as much root growth as possible this growing year. I would be really happy if it didn't grow any taller and concentrated roots.

So lets look at when I first planted it.
So here is the plant after 8 months, I am sort of unimpressed by its growth.
Betting Brian just snarfed his coffee! ROFLMAO!!!
So here is the photo I really just took. I have been robing leaves to cook with already!
I am thinking the three predominate stalks might get a braid someday........ BUT!
I am seeing all this new tender growth and I hate croping back good excited growth. I know I need to, but its just so happy to be here.
BTW with the exception of the drought last summer for 2 months, I have done nothing to the plant, no water, no food, not even any talking to! Look at the suckers sprouting up!
Oh well its an update....... We have yet to see a freeze again this year. The bugs are going to take over again!

Looks great Kev. I cut mine back to two predominate stalks. One is just over 2 feet tall and the other is about 18" Had the same idea to braid them into one nice trunk. The plant is now placed the garage in front of a large window for the winter.
Im already training the two trunks for move closer together. I planted in Miracle Gro and have used the fertilizer while watering a few times this year.
I've been using the few trimmings for cooking and drying the rest. Your lady friend down the river is correct! The flavor of fresh bay is awesome in gumbo and beans!
I feared I almost lost my plant early on. One thing I found out is grasshopper LOVE bay! Tough to keep them off the plant during the hot months.
