I have free run from the lady to build a smoker in the backyard. Any basic layouts out there or "how-to's" so I can get started with my planning? I have a lot of space to work with.

I'm right there with ya. I am about to start my own thread for my project. To answer your question about the how too's I say this. Decide first a concept. What type of existing smoker are you wanting to emulate, reproduce or modify to make your own? Seems to me there are several options in function, style and materials used to create the end result. No one is the best it seems, its personal preference. figure out what makes your mouth water and go from there. Good luck

Your a lucky man!   Make your lady proud!!

Like pats said.  Have an idea before you start.   I researched for a good year before I started.   My biggest advice is make sure you have a good footing and  make sure you get it deep enough for your region.   You have to get below the freeze line.

For what its worth here is the link to my build.  I love my smoker.   It has become a long thread, but as I used my smoker,  I also talked about what I would do differently.

There isn't a lot of info on the web about brick smokers.   We have a good group here that will help anyway we can with questions!

How would one find out the freeze line? I am assuming thats how deep you can expect the ground to freeze
rvial,   call your local building inspector and ask them  how deep a footing has to be to build a house in your area.  That will be the answer.  I suggest not telling them what your doing.  In some areas you have to have a permit to build anything.   I always figured what they don't know won't hurt them.    They are usually more then happy to answer questions though
