It turns out that not everyone loves the smell of bacon.

A San Francisco bacon restaurant, fittingly called "Bacon Bacon,” was forced to shut its door on Friday after neighbors complained that the "porcine aroma" wafting from the establishment was too strong.

According to the San Francisco Examiner

, neighbors also alleged the store was illegally dumping bacon grease into the sewers and the restaurant lacked the proper health permits to operate the business.

The restaurant may be able to secure a permit and resume operations, but a hearing cannot be held until July, so for now the restaurant will remain closed.

The news sparked an outpouring of support via social media.

“Who dislikes the smell of bacon???” Joe Creitz wrote on the Bacon Bacon facebook page

.

“Complaining about the smell of bacon is like complaining that it's a nice day out,” wrote another user.

Supporters of the business have already amassed over 2,000 signatures on a Save Bacon Bacon

website dedicated to reopening the store.

The pork-themed drama even received a nod from Amy Poehler during this weekend’s Saturday Night Live.

“It’s gotta be really tricky to walk up to a cop and complain that something smells like bacon,” joked Poehler.

For now, the bacon-centric restaurant will close its storefront, but the quest to provide San Francisco with bacon will continue. Owner Jim Angelus will be running his operation out of a food truck

until he is able to secure the right permits to reopen.

Seems like there's three issues here.
  1. Complaints about the smell of bacon
  2. illegally dumping bacon grease into the sewers
  3. restaurant lacked the proper health permits to operate the business.
If I were a betting man I would say they were closed because of #2 and/or #3 and the media ran with #1

The article does say alleged for # 2

I also find this interesting;

Owner Jim Angelus will be running his operation out of a food truck  until he is able to secure the right permits to reopen.(back to issue #3)

This tells me that #3 is more accurate and that he may have not had the correct permits to begin with

So be careful before jumping on the bandwagon of saving the bacon guy.

And before folks hammer me I am neutral and just wanted to point out what I got from the article.

However, with that said, if he is in violation of #2 I think he should be arrested and fined.

Well, I'm going to have to agree with SQWIB!

The most likely reason he was shut down was the permitting; however, if he was dumping bacon grease down the sewers that is a huge environmental violation, and in Cali?  No way he's getting away with that!

I love bacon as much as the next guy, probably more than I should, but you have to be responsible as a business owner and member of the community.
