Just wondering if anyone ever hang there butts instead of on the rack? If so what do you use for hangers?

sometimes when I spend too much on smoking, Katie has my but in a sling. LOL

I would either use a net, or a muslin bag, like for a Virginia ham.

I agree....I don't think a butt would be able to hang in your smoker for the whole time without something to help hold it together.

It is an interesting idea....though it seems kind of a waste to use a bag or butcher's twine when the rack serves the purpose just fine.

    My $.02 worth,
    Eric

the purpose of smoking a butt, is so it falls apart.........so hanging it, the meat MAY fall apart into the bottom of the smoker............

You could use stockinette, but I don't know where you could get a small amount of it. Most times it comes in a 1,000 - 10,000 ft rolls. My dad used it in his smokers (you have to remember they were 12' tall and everything was hung!). You can see the hams still in stockinette in this pic. You would want to hang them if all you're going to do is smoke them from a pickled (brined) state, turning them into a ham-type product. However, you're not going to build up a bark on them (because they're covered with the stockinette), just a smoked permeation.
