Good Morning All

I plan to do a smoke today, but I'm out of pellets for my AMNPS and won't be able to get any more until Tuesday--not a good thing.  I do, however, have lots of apple and cherry chips left over from before I got my AMNPS, and was wondering how they would work.  If anybody has tried this, I'd like to hear from you about how well (or badly) this worked.  Any tips or suggestions for a successful smoke with this method would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, I have been wondering the same for I have a few bags of retired chips that I'd love to use up if I could.  Maybe today while I'm smoking some Salmon, I might just try, on the side, some chips in one of my extra AMNPS as well as a AMNTS.

I've used chips in my home made tube smoker. Someone else on here has as well, but I can't remember who it was. Anyway, I saw their post about it and tried for myself. It worked very well. Only issue was a void created by one big chip getting kinda stuck in the middle causing the ember to go out. Obviously not the fault of thenoker or the chips. If I remember correctly it burned a little faster. I usually get four hours out of my tube with pellets and I think I got a total of three with chips.

ive mixed pellets and chips together but never tried just chips. The chips have to be small and they will burn faster than just pellets. That's in my amnts; I don't have a amnps.

If you have an old food processor, and you have fast reflexes for when you wife comes at you, you could try and make some small chips and try that...

Hi Gary...sorry I'm late to the party. I mix some hickory or mesquite chips in with the pellets in my tube most of the time. A ratio of about 3 to 1 pellets to chips...but I've never tried just chips. Might be hard to get them to smolder slowly without just burning up.

If you tried this, be sure to let us know how it worked. Thumbs Up

Hey guys

Thanks for all the advice.  I tried just the chips, but couldn't keep them lit--would only burn for a couple of minutes and go out.  Relit it 4 times and finally had to give up.  Good news is that I'll be in the city on Tuesday and can restock.

Tried some alder chips in one of my AMNPS and as Gary, it would smoke very lightly for a couple minutes then go out. Maybe chopping in up into smaller pieces via a blender, would help....maybe not.

Try drying them first at 275, in the oven, for several hours... I would use apple since cherry is hard to burn......

For several hours?    Are the chips worth all that?   I guess if you were stranded on a desert island...with a warehouse full of chips  LOL

Morning Dave.  My chips were so dry, I was more afraid of them turning into a fireball than not staying lit.  They were cherry, so that probably added to the problem.

Morning.  Your load of chips and mine looked like twins.  Guess it just isn't meant to be.

I guess if it's Memorial Holiday weekend, and you want to smoke something and are out of pellets, what ever it takes to have some smoked grub, it may be worth it.....

Every smoke, I dry the pellets for several hours to insure uninterrupted smoke..... Having to relight pellets, during a smoke is a PITA....

I have used chips in the AMNPS and they are difficult to get a complete smoke/burn.....
