Ok I got my barrel (it held veggie oil). I decided to burn the paint off.

Do I need to do anything else to the inside?

Im using a wire brush to get the rest of the paint off the outside. Should I continue on the inside?

Any help would be appreciated, I would love to use the uds this weekend if possible.
Thanks

I just started my first UDS last weekend so I'm no expert but if there is no liner on the inside and you are down to bare metal, season it and then cook away.

I think there was a liner, kinda a tannish color. Is that what you are talking about?

Damn!!! I guess another burn out is in order. The wire brush seems to take forever!!! I guess Ill need to smoke in my GOSM this weekend.

If it's the orange liner, don't waste your time with another burn unless you can fire it with about 40 pounds of mesquite lump and a couple of old Christmas trees. From what I have heard, you damn near have to turn the outside of the barrel orange from heat to get the orange liner out - and the smoke is nasty.

Get yourself an angle grinder with a wire wheel or a 40 grit disc, and someone else to do the labor.

You'll be money ahead. Or get your self another barrel. I still have the one with the orange liner that I started in my backyard.

Don't mean to bum you out but that orange liner is a real PITA to get out.

Good luck.

The first burn got most of the inner liner off. It is kinda a tannish orange color Ill try getting some pallets and have another go at it. It started snowing out this morning so Im stuck inside. Did a beer can chicken yesterday it turned out nice but not the best I have made. I thought I had temps high enough to crisp the skin but it turned out like leather! Ahhh I guess I should check my new thermometers accuracy. Trying a Pork Loin stuffed with spinich ricotta, parmasian olives and hot sausage maybe some pinapple too. Sounds interesting Ill let you know.

It is a bit mor on the tan side but that is close. Most of it burned off on the first burn, Ill try a couple more. I bought a wire brush wheel for my drill. Ill try that too. I also have a neighbor with a grinder if need be. "Anticipation is making me wait!!!"
