My name is Tanner and I live in the Portland, Oregon area.  I love to cook and grill.  Both of my brothers have Traeger's and now I want to get into smoking.

I need some help getting started and I have a few questions.  I'm not sure where to post them so if I need to put them elsewhere, please point me in the right direction.

First, I inherited a smoker from my wife's grandpa.  I need help figuring out the brand (if any) and what I should do to it to improve it's function.

Is this considered an electric smoker because of the heating element?

Are the grates for meat and the mesh for fish/jerky?

There is what looks like a drip pan under the bottom rack, but no real smoker box.

Basically trying to figure out how to use this.

Thanks in advance and I can't wait to get started.

I don't know what brand it is but it is an electric smoker. You guessed the parts correctly and there is a chip pan missing. You can use a small cast Iron frying pan. It doesn't look very used. From the picture the cord looks pretty old just from the style of it and you should inspect before using it. You should also invest in a probe thermometer and test run the smoker and see what temps you can achieve.

Welcome to the forums, Tanner!  You've found a great place to learn and share ideas on our favorite pastime...Smoking and Grilling great food!  There are lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks here who really enjoy helping one another.  Just ask when you need help and you'll get plenty.

Not positive, but that rig looks like a homemade job to me.  Absolutely nothing wrong with that, many members build their own smokers.  It looks like you might want to upgrade the heat source with a new element, and find something to use as a chip/chunk box.  As Todd suggested, a cast iron skillet would work great.  I suggest surfing through the Electric forum, and the Smoker Builds forums as well, for some good tips and ideas on getting that rig going.

Good Luck, and have fun!
