Yup---Adam's right---Definitely a Gen #2. It has the slanted drip plate with the little water pan hanging on the left end.

It's one of the newer Gen #2 units because it has the top vent on top instead of on the left side.

    I'd avoid this one.

On the late Generation 2.0 models with the vent on top, all parts are replaceable like they are on the new 2.5 Bluetooth Smokers whereas this wasn't possible on the older 2.0's. That doesn't mean it is any better than the older Generation 2.0, it just means all parts are replaceable.

So I read a bit on the later model gen 2's and specifically why is it thought that these are Not worth purchasing? Is it more speculation based or are the owners really complaining about them as they more than anyone would be the SME on these.

I read where the drip pan is slanted and some other items thought to maybe diminish the unit's function but it seems minor to me....then again I am no expert. Could someone really break it down for those of us less knowledgeable as why it's not a good unit for the price? up until a month ago I thought the MB rocked, then it suddenly went dead. I need to fix it but it also left me thinking you get what you pay for with any of these. I visited a local BBQ smoker shop in the next town over in Manhattan, KS and he just trashed them all all but the food that came out of my G1 smoker with the A-maze-N smoke pan just rocked.

I am looking hard at a Smokintex 1400 unit but the $199 sale they had today on the masterbuilt was tempting

You answered one of your own questions when you said the food from your Gen #1 & Amazing Smoker "Rocked". So has mine for more than 5 years.

As for the Gen #2, a few guys say they have good results with theirs, but the large majority seem to have had many problems with the controls & temp balance. The one I tested could not hold a balance of heat from left to right. That slanted plate you mentioned is higher on the right, above the heating element. The drips are supposed to land on that & run down to the water pan hanging in it on the bottom left.  The heat comes up to that plate & the plate slows it up. Then the heat accumulates there, and doesn't naturally go to the left because heat rises to the plate & then to the right because the plate is higher on the right. I found that to be the biggest design problem, along with the top vent being on the side. All of the changes they made from the #2 to the #2.5 were suggestions I made, except the Bluetooth. I would have kept the regular remote, but I'm sure they had their reasons.

    The Gen #1 is Fantastic.

The Gen #2.5 looks real promising so far.

Thank you for the detailed explanations on the Gen 2 units.
