I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the set up for your MES. I just bought the Amazen tube smoker and have read that the chip loader needs to be pulled out completely and the chip tray needs to be pulled out 1"-1.5"? If the chip loader is in place, I'm assuming the draft won't happen, correct?

Also, if you try to use wood chips in addition to the AMNPS, is it worth it/or even possible since the chip tray is pulled out?

Thank you so much for the help

Hi, first welcome to the forum.  Your title refers to a pellet smoker (AMNPS). Then you state you purchased a tube. Todd Johnson told me the proper placement for the AMNPS  is to the left of the element on the bars shown in the link. I have experimented with pulling out the chip tray from 1.5 inches to total removal. I remove mine and pull out the tube loader till I can see the holding area. Your mileage may vary depending on the available air flow. I always insert the tray with the burning end first. It works for me, a MES 30 Owner.

Forget about burning the chips. Save them for your propane or charcoal cookers.  Just my opinion as a owner.   Jted

I'm wondering if you confused the acronym AMNPS as referring to the tube smoker because I think you would be aware of whether you bought the tube smoker or the pellet smoker.  I own the AMNPS and I place mine where Jted advised it should go. However, in my MES 30 Gen 1 I found that inserting it with the burning end to the rear works best for me. It seems there's greater airflow in the back, possibly due to the placement of the top vent back there. I also pull out the chip loader about 2 inches.

I never use wood chips. Actually, one time I did because I was smoking a couple racks of baby back ribs with pecan wood pellets but I also wanted to add some applewood flavor but all I had were apple wood chips at the time. It worked but no need to repeat this since I just got a big bag of apple wood pellets from Todd.
