Not if you are going to fill it up. I had some success just filling the outside rows and lighting both ends - side by side the pellets get too hot and burn thru to the next row

Scar is correct, you can use pellets, but only in the first and last rows.

    any idea approx how long a row burns for? Just curious.

In my 6X8 I could get almost 2.5 hours per row - sometimes more sometimes less. The issue is that the older ones are not vented in the same manner as the Pellet version and don't get as much air. A lot depends on how much ventelation you get inside your smoker.
