Also hello from NJ

  1. Hey all,

I'm just beginning my hobby here.  For Father's Day last year my wife got me a Weber Silver grill.  I quickly converted it to a smoker with a couple of aluminum pans and some wood chips.  Since then every major meal in our home has featured something from the smoker.  I made my first pulled pork shoulder, a nice 5 1/2 pound Boston Butt, on it this weekend with a North Carolina vinegar sauce.  It was a huge hit and my wife happily green lit me for something more sophisticated.

I'm afraid I'm joining the ranks of the other gas powered smoker owners here because I've decided on a Great Outdoor propane rig.  Yes, the purists can be outraged now if you like, but I look forward to my Lazy Q.  I'm planning to get the 22 inch model, fix it up with some extra seals to hold the air in tight, an extra large wood box and water tray and a dual thermometer for meat and the inside.  (I've priced everything out already.)  I am taking suggestions for anything better and a list of the best modifications you think I can make.

As for me, I'm a dead on beginner who has fallen in love with this hobby.  My family and I are from the Jersey Shore, yes, insert joke here, but we are much more proud of our UFC Lightweight World Champion Frankie Edgar, from our town, than we are for anyone featured on an MTV reality show.  (Yes, I worked as a cop in Seaside, where they film the show.)

I look forward to getting involved and trying some of these recipes.

  2. Welcome! Maybe we will see you at the NJ BBQ Championships one day........Have fun...Its a blast!

    Welcome to the SMF party!

When you have a chance, please update your profile with your location, thanks.

I have a GOSM gasser that I love.  Yes the wood burners may wince but the food that comes out tastes great to me and that's all that matters.

  4. Hello David and welcome to SMF! No jokes about the Jersey Shore cause I don't watch that garbage, so I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your neck of the woods! Have fun with your smoker and all the mods.
  5. welcome fellow jersey, i grew up riding in crystal lakes near the highschool we made the journey every weekend without fail and have to say your area is known for a lot more than the jersey shore, met some really good local good ol boys down there

    Welcome aboard!

No fuel discrimination on my part.  I am partial to charcoal and wood, but as I get older, the set and forget of gas or electric has its appeal!

    Good luck and good smoking.

Welcome to the SMF Family...Hey there is no need to appologize for growing up in one of the greatest resort towns on the East Coast...I'm from Piscataway, TP Exit 10, Prkwy Exit 127...And spent many years at Seaside, 40 years before a bunch of NewYork Clowns got on TV...They could have at least got some Jersey kids to do the show but they couldn't find any that Stupid...JJ

First off welcome to SMF there David. You'll really like this place for there are a bunch of really good folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. Then if you have any questions you just post them here or yu can try in chat for a faster answer. If you are really new to all of this I would recommend that you look up and take the e-course. It is free and it will also give you the basics on smoking. So with all that said now go and get something to smoke.

    Welcome To Your New Addiction
