Hello all, name is Tyler. New to the forum, and fairly new to smoking/BBQ, not so new to grilling and cooking in general. Been getting by smoking 1 or 2 times a year using my old Weber 22.5 kettle, decided that I would make the jump and get an actual smoker.

Picked up a Brinkmann Vertical Charcoal Smoker (the square one) last week, and immediately set to modifying it (I'm a VW guy, nothing can be left un-modified!), ok, mostly planning, but I did one thing at least :) . I drilled a bunch of holes in the charcoal pan to help out with airflow. Then, I quickly found the Cowboy charcoal is horrible, and went and found some Big Green Egg charcoal at a place near my work. That turned out fairly well. Got a batch of pork-chops done up nicely. I do have some questions about this thing, but I'll save that for the Charcoal Smoker forum.

    Welcome and enjoy .

I've been smoking by trial and lots of error for about 8 years

on my own. This forum has opened up a whole new world of smoking for me.

Lots of good info here and a whole bunch of good guys that are more than happy to help
  5. Welcome to SMF!! I hope your stay here is enjoyable and informative. The only thing you may or may not can get a cure for is the addiction to this Hobby, Craft and Lively Hood. Post some Qview soon so we can see some of your skills.

First off welcome Tyler to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

then you will have a method to your newly found madness and believe me it will be a madness. Then when you start smoking things you will have to learn how to post the pictures / Qview

here. So here's a link to a tutorial on how to post your Qview so we can see what your doing.

Now the next thing you have to do is run out and get something to smoke. Then just smoke it and if you have any questions just post  them here and we will answer all your questions that you might have. Oh yea there's no stupid questions we were all there in the beginning and we just really like to help others enjoy the fabulous smoked foods that we do. So again

    Welcome to Your New Addiction

Thanks for the warm welcome from all :)

sumosmoke - I am near Portland, OR, just on the other side of the Columbia in Vancouver, WA

BayouChilehead - Don't worry, pics will be forth-coming, in fact, here are some of when I did a little smoking on my Weber

Also, I have this little guy sitting behind my house. I was going to sell it, but after reading up on UDS's, I think it might make a very good candidate for one (my wife will want to string me up for buying a smoker, and then making one out of something I already had :-\ )

got to looking closer at that stove, it's rusted through in a couple places. Luckily though, I found a barrel source down in Salem, and have a cousin close by who is going to pick one up for me. Should be getting it at the end of the month.

Glad to see another happy smoker join the SMF. Most mods will improve the performance of a smoker, keep at it. BTW, try Royal Oak lump if you can find it, much better the Cowboy. It's all good my friend.

richoso1 - I'm keeping at it, but as the 'budget' grows, I keep getting more and more flack from my wife [IMG]. I did check around for Royal Oak, and no one locally carries it. I am almost through a bag of BGE lump, will be trying Frontier next, it has some good reviews over at nakedwhiz.

WALLE - soon as I get the barrel, I will be putting together the UDS, in fact, I already have the pieces to put together the charcoal basket, so I will begin that first [IMG]

Pleased to meet you -- I hope you guessed my name, but what's puzzling you is the nature of my game.
