Hello All -

My name is Troy, and I'm from Pittsburgh, PA. I've never smoked anything yet, but can't wait to give it a try. My wife got me a Brinkmann Vertical Charcoal Smoker for Christmas. It has two cooking grates, four air dampers, two bowls (for H2O and charcoal) and a thermometer. Although I'm not allowed to use it yet (not until Christmas Day!), I'm trying to read and educate myself as much as possible before I actually fire it up.

If anyone has any experience with this type of smoker, I'd love to hear from you.

Welcome to the forum Troy!

Welcome to SMF. There are several here with that type of smoker and I am sure they will be along to give you tips soon. Until check out all the site has to offer.

Welcome to the SMF, we'll help you anyway we can, I'll even beg you're wife to let you use it before Christmas

Hello h-lividum,
Welcome to the SMF. I know what you are going through. My wife gave me a GOSM a few years ago and did the same thing. I couldn't even uncrate the thing much less season or actually use it until Christmas Day. But I've got to tell you, I've had a lot of good times since then and made a lot of folks happy. I really enjoy smoking for friends and neighbors. Cold beer, good friends and some good Q. Great combo. And by the way, don't miss Jeff's smoking five day e-course. It' the best place to start that I can think of.

Troy:

Nice to have you on board. What a great Christmas present. You will get years of pleasure out of it.

I know you will enjoy your time here on SMF.

Once again, welcome.

After you have presented a smoke or two off of it, your wife will regret not letting you have it sooner and getting you a temperature probe for XMas. Congrats though on gettting a smoker, with time you will hardly remember what an oven or a grill looks like !!!

Troy welcome to the smf, be sure to check out the 5-day ecourse since ya got a little time till your wife lets you play with the new toy. I know it's so hard to wait but it'll be worth it in the end.

Welcome aboard Troy, glad you found us! That's a good smoker you got there, too bad you're not allowed to touch it until the big day... oh well, you can live vicariously through us until then!

Have fun!

Welcome Troy. Start making room for the addicition. Tell the wife to get rid of the fancy lawn ornaments and push the lawn chairs into the corner of the yard. Gotta make room for your next 2 smokers and a stack of wood.

Troy - Welcome to SMF!
As soon as your wife lets you get your hands on the smoker season it. Should be instructions in the box. If not you can find out how on this forum. Once thats done your ready to smoke. In the mean time take the 5 day e-course for the basics. If you have ANY questions at all just ask. The folks on this forum are AMAZING with their knowledge and willingness to help you make the very best BBQ. I look forward to hearing about your first offering to the smoking gods.

Troy, welcome to the SMF. Glad to see you're going to be in the ring of fire! You might want to calibrate/test your thermo before doing a smoke, sometimes the factory job isn't quite that accdurate. Good Luck my friend. Also consider buying a meat probe thermo, you really do need it to know when the meat is done.
