A tip of the virtual beer mug

  1. Greetings from the newest of newbies to this forum, recommended to me by a fellow smoke-lover of both electronic and now real-life acquaintance.

I'm by no means a pitmaster but not quite wet behind the ears either. I've had a Brinkmann bullet smoker (charcoal) for a couple of years now, gifted me by my brother when he moved across the country, a promotional item he acquired by the careful collection of proofs-of-purchase from his recently-abandoned Marlboro habit. I started out a bit ambitious with a fauxstrami but switched to pulled pork after that and I think by now I know my way around a butt :) Here is a picture from one of my first pulled pork BBQs, summer of '08

A few more pics, to establish my bonafides. Unfortunately I recently broke my camera so it may be some time before I can provide you with up-to-date Qview

    Smoked garlic:

Banana peppers, stuffed with a mixture of raw hot links, aged cheddar, diced jalapenos, bread crumbs and egg, not wrapped with bacon as is standard unfortunately as that would have improved them:

I'm more known among my friends as a homebrewer and appreciator of other fine beers (hence the moniker) but I think my BBQs are gaining appreciation among them as well.

Next up for me, smoked and pickled eggs (probably tonight, though of course I won't get to taste the results for a month or more) and this weekend, smoked brisket with smoked mac & cheese (recipe in my head, will post if it turns out worthwhile).

Let me see, what else? I'm from downstate Illinois, lived on the North side of Chicago the past several years and just moved to the South suburbs at the beginning of the summer. I work downtown as a professional nerd. I weigh at least 30 lbs more than I should. Wife, 3 kids, etc.

Welcome from a fellow craft beer lover as well. I'll be in Chicago myself next week for Pinball Expo in Wheeling. Going to hit up some of the awesome breweries you guys have over there Friday.

  10. Thanks for the kind welcoming words everyone!

Excellent! Which breweries do you plan to visit?

If it's not too off-topic maybe I'll start a thread on the subject sometime. I'm sure there must be other homebrewers out there who could contribute as well.

Goose Island and Piece for sure. The Ram is right across the street from the Westin hotel the expo is located at in Wheeling, but it's not high on my list. I am also planning a burger at Kuma's Corner during my Friday excursion.

Welcome to the SMF Jim. QVIEW looks good.
  16. Those are some good ones, the Goose Island on Clybourn is definitely a favorite, they always have something on tap there that you won't be able to find in bottles, and I love Piece's brews and pizza both. I have some favorites in the suburbs too (the Ram is not among them, though I've heard that location is among the better instances of that particular chain) but I don't think too many of them are going to be terribly convenient for you if you're staying in Wheeling.

btw you may already be aware of this site, but if you need any assistance finding places to hit, http://beermapping.com is a great resource.
