I was at Sam's today as usual. They have been doing a fund raiser for kids with cancer. Today they had Frito pies and the manager said it went well. I said you should get a Masterbuilt smoker out here and we could sell a lot, not to mention getting some exposure for the Masterbuilt smoker and selling a few of them. I told her I would do some things as an experiment and let her know.

Nice view from the other night.

First a nice view from the other night. I would hate not to share it.

Angus burgers 1/3 pound.

After about 1 hour at 160'. Couldn't taste the smoke, but Carol said they were great, but a little greasy. Next time I would get the 85 -15 fat content.

I think we could make some money for the kids and sell a few smokers.

What do you think?

I would be voluntering my time of course.

Next test will be chicken thighs. Also thinking about sloppy joes in the smoker.

Sounds like a great idea Ron! Sounds like a good charity group to toss some help into.

Hope it goes well, and you can show a few folks what a smoker can do for their food.

Hey Ron,

I think that's a very nice thing you're trying to volunteer to do. More people should do that.

What's Frito Pie? Guess I'll go google that next. Also, if you're going to smoke stuff to sell, why burgers? With your skills you ought to do some PP and really turn some people on. Or why not your famous ribs?

That sure is a worthy project, I hope it goes over big time for the Kids.

I was thinking the same thing. Why Burgers, then I got a flash of blood to my head and realized that almost anything else takes too long to get started. Hotdawgs , Brats, burgers etc are quick and everybody loves them. Make up a large dish of Dutch's wicked baked beans , have some of those one ounce paper cups and give everyone a sample , Mrs housewife will be begging you for the recipe.

Smoked hotdogs are the bomb.... I bet you can sell quite a few smokers.

Pulled pork sammies with coleslaw on a bun would be the pinnacle of course but take too many hours to get ready, but man would they sell smokers..

Good on you for thinking up that one.

A frito pie here is a layer of fritos on the bottom, red chili with beans like Wendy's serves on top, then some onions and tomatoes, and lettuce topped with shreaded cheese.

Thanks, I am just thinking of time involved. I would have to do it there to be legal none of the above would be good for that. I have some chix thighs on now to see if the time window might work. I am figuring 2 1/2 hours and can do almost 80 per batch and they could hold them in a nesco type roaster at 165'. Of course the skin would be tough.

This is just an experiment at this point. Thanks for the encouragement.

I'd be careful... don't know what the regulations for food service are in your state, but serving the public cooked food you may need a permit or license, even if it is for charity, and there's inspection and chance of getting sued if someone got sick (even if it wasn't from your food.. if their grandmother undercooked the breakfast sausage before they went to Sam's - they'd blame you vs. granny).

I'd do a nice display of wrapped candy bars at a buck apiece on top of each unplugged smoker myself... have one going to smell the smoke, maybe have bins of tortilla chips inside to hand out as samples (I'll smoke up a bag of tortilla chips every now and then, they go great with salsa, caeso and beer!) but nothing more than that!

Smoked tortilla chips. Just when I think I've heard it all! Gonna add that to this weekend's activities, for SURE!

Good call on the liability front, as well. Not sure if you could get under Sam's coverage if you're doing it on their property, but it's definitely something to think about in the litigation age...

Some culture we live in today. If you want to do something nice for others or a charity, you have to first worry about getting sued, health inspections, permits, general liability, offending some group, offending some individual, OSHA requirement, State Safety requirements, post signs saying this may cause cancer, on and on and on.

Makes you want to just stay home, hug your gun, brew your own beer, keep half a cow in the freezer and never go to the store, because there will be some other idiot there holding a bbq for a charity having all the fun, but he decided "What the Hell, I'm going to do it anyway"!

Once again into the breech my good man. Tis time for all good souls to finally say enoeph is enoeph. See if your home owners insurance has an umbrella coverage for charitable events and volenteer community events. Mine does and I would be covered as long as I am not making a dime.

Well I talked to the asst manager that wanted me to do it, I brought up the liabilty question, and she talked to the store manager, and she nixed it for the liability angle. I guess just as well as we are close to 100' everyday anyway.

Doesn't make sense though, they are already selling ready to eat stuff, like frito pies ETC. Just because I am not an employee, maybe?

Oh, well, the tought was there.

It's a damn shame we can't do things to help others without the BS!!!

Thanks for the points man, I agree.

Great participation on your part Ron. Nothing like spreading the wealth.
