I concur. if you put in flashing or barstock or whatever just reveal it to the exact highth you need. then it will not mess with the hinge dynamics. just my two cents. happy smoking

I hope that works well for you. and I hope that next time you will not mess with the weber lid. sorry, just like somebody running into grandma with their car.

Why is that?
I don't know either, I just left it alone. One of the odd things about the Internet is that there are people out there that believe their way of doing anything is the best and only way. Anyone daring to do different will only be berated.

I am in love with my Webers and had a few too many. sorry, my bad. I had forgotten I made that comment. I knew I was thinking it though. The coating that Weber applies to their kettles is awesome and when you go hammering on it you will have a peeling rusty lid in a matter of months. Still, sorry for the comment. Plus, I have been looking for a cool colored lid for my UDS for a couple of years. Still, no excuse for that. Apologies. Timber

I work for the company that makes the steel that Weber uses to make the BBQ's.

Have no worries about the quality... they are very very good.
No doubt. I have 3 at the moment. Last year when I got my performer I gifted my old kettle to a young couple that was cooking on a kmart special. It is in perfect shape after 24 years in the weather of the pacific northwest. Not one chip, no rust, nothing. Awesome.

I just found a donor weber grill for my UDS yesterday. The lid is only 1/4" shy of fitting the drum so I am leaning towards bending it out to fit. For such a small distance I don't feel like going through the extra work of installing a new ring for the lid. Hopefully it works.

That is what I am doing also.

If you do not achieve an air tight seal when installing the lid, you will lose temperature control... carefully weigh your options....

Good point Dave. I guess I need to try and make it work before I start bending the lid as there is no coming back from that.

Not really necessary. As long as it's close. after a smoke or two the smoke/ moisture residue will seal the few gaps. Hell, I can lift my UDS using the lid and just the "smokin' goop" provides the seal.
