Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to make some mods on my CG pro w/SFB. I bought these great looking River Country 3" thermos for starters. I am wondering if I need to calibrate these things, or are they good-to-go right out of the package?

Also, if they do need calibration, how do you do that?

I have two of those exact ones. Mine were dead on right out of the package, but of course you don't know that unless you check them first anyway.

If you do need to calibrate, there is a screw on the back to adjust them.

what they said placing in boiling water should read 212 ? also place in ice water to see if reads around 32 if not they are off and I just plus or minus what diffrence is.

I just bough a CG and will be doing the mods when I put it together. Did you get your thermometers online? I haven't found a local source for them yet.

Thanks!

Thanks for the help everyone!! I did do the boil test last night and they were identically dead on. I'll be installing them today along with a couple of other mods that have been suggested by all you experts on the forum. Thanks again.

For JAK757: I'm an affiliate for Amazon.com, so I got the thermos through them. $19.97 ea with free shipping. And if you can, do your mods before you use your CG. It will save you from all of the nasties that come with smoking.

I just got two of these exact same thermometers for my CGSP and just finished the boil test. One seemed very accurate (only a slight twist of the screw to get it dead on) while the other was about 20 degrees higher. I tried adjusting it with the screw but I wonder how many turns it should take to get it where you want it. I must have turned it 10-15 revolutions and it still reads about 5 degrees hotter than the other?

If you want it to be calibrated very precicely, be aware that 212 is only the boiling point at sea level with average barametric pressure. Living at higher altitude I have to make adjustment for things. Here is s website that will tell you the boiling at your altitude and current pressure.

Thanks, I was aware of that. I am in the Tampa Bay area of Florida so I'm about as close to sea level as I'm gonna get. If I'm not mistaken one also needs to use distilled water since different minerals and such will affect the boiling point.

In any event I am more curious as to why one of the thermometers was so far off from the other and why I had to rotate the adjustment screw as much as I did. I only had to turn the one a quarter turn or so. The more I think about it the more I think one of them must be defective.

I ordered these directly from River Country. $17.95 with free shipping and no sales tax.

You can get these for $16.50 off of Ebay direct from River Country with Free shipping.

I saw that your thermo meter only when to 100° and I would just do the boiling water test then and you should be fine. I have that thermo meter in my bandera.
