A few Newbie questions

Hello all!

i have a few questions...

I was given an electric smoker, a medium sized can shaped one. I put it together and read the instructions but they are very vague 

on how the wood chips are used. there is the electric element in the bottom surrounded by lava rocks, and a water pan. Where do i put the chips? in an aluminum pie pan directly on the element, under the water pan? 

please enlighten the NewBie on how to get the smoker smokin' !

yes it sure does look like  R2-D2!

I figure it goes from bottom to top:

element/lava rocks

chip/wood pan or pouches

water pan 

two grills 

lid

any tips?

Keep your electrical cord as short as possible and a decent gauge. Double check the temperature gauge in the smoker, they are known to be off quite a bit. These smokers are somewhat limited by ambient temps, so avoid rain and wind if at all possible. If you find you cannot get in the 225 to 250º smoking zone, see about changing the water out of the pan to Playbox Sand instead.
