Position the angle so that it sits on top, also weld your expanded metal on top of that, do not install it from underneath or you will have a lip all the way around your cooking grate that will hold in grime.

AMEN! to that! I have plans to rip mine out and apart and do it again for that very reason.

Top of the angle iron!!!

Spent some more time working on the smoker today. I got the grates made,
And just for a reference point and to add perspective to the overall size, I set an 18" level on the grate in this picture.
Then I decided that I've delayed cutting the smoke stack hole for long enough.
It actually came out pretty good given that I used nothing more than 2 cutting discs, and 1 flap wheel.

Quick trick or tip. Just cup the cap to approx. size, tack weld it to an extra piece of pipe the same size as the stack  and use your grinder to shape it to the pipe. When ground to the correct shape, the tack welds will then be ground off and you will have a perfectly shaped cap.  Much faster than trying to make a million cuts when a cut off wheel.

I like the damper. I am thinking of doing mine the same way. Would you do it different if you had to do it again?

The only thing I might would do differently would be to use 1/8" for the stopper, only because it would be significantly easier to bend along the contour.
In my saying that please remember I am VERY LIMITED on the tools I currently own. I used a bottle of propane for a campers stove to heat the 3/16" flat stock. I can definitly say that with the right attitude and determination you can accomplish anything. But as far as design it works great, I just need to weld the round stock to make the handle down lower to the tank.

Thanks, I have some 1/8 I can use. I am pretty limited on tools that I own too. If it was not for some good people letting me borrow theirs, I would not be able to do this.

So I spent about 6 hours just burning up some wood in it today, playing with the intake dampers and waiting about 30min to see the effects. And for 4hours of that time I smoke about 3 lbs of fatback on the grates and got a good coating of grease on the racks and just about everything that slides and moves.
I'm going to try 3 racks of ribs tomorrow morning and should be eating a good lunch before I go into work at 1pm. I will take various pics and post them up tomorrow. Until then ......

At last, I got to try it out and cook me some ribs. Here I have the fire going and cooking away.

Here is the ribs after about 3 hours, it was actually the first time I opened either one of the cooking doors.

Here is a pic after about 4hours and 1sharp knife.

My Dad just happened to stop by the house whe he heard the smoker was up and running. He took this shot and while it's not the clearest it does show the smoke ring pretty good.
All in all it was a great day, everyone loved the ribs and can't wait for more.
