Welcome locovet,

Yep, that is one gaping wet rusty nasty tank you got there. The finest smokers start from such humble beginnings!

Looking forward to watching this build come together.

Will it be ok to use a larger diameter and longer chimney stack than what the calculator calls for? I already have a 6" pipe?

Ok. Thanks. My buddy ran the calculator on his computer yesterday and I will post the results when I get them just to double check them before we cut out for the firebox.

We are going to try and drop off the tank this week to get it sandblasted. We also cut the 3 upper door drafts. We are going to use the screw down type like you see on older wood stoves.

Did anyone get a chance to look over my calculator #s just to double check for me? This is our first build and input would be much appreciated!

I try not to weigh in on calculations, but some of the other members should be along to help you out.

Weekends are a busy time for most folks, so they may not be able to respond right away.

You should contact Gary and ask him.... It looks like the firebox vent opening are incorrect to me, but I don't know what goal he had in mind....

It appears the upper and lower inlets are reversed.... the lower should be the larger number and the upper, the smaller number... the upper air inlets bleed small amounts of air into the CC for temp control and moving heat from the FB to the CC.....

Total sq. in. opening, for the FB should be around 30 sq. in. I suggest ~20-30% upper air inlet and ~80% lower air inlets... I'm not sure what "high" and "low" designate....

Below is my calculator/tutorial... it is a "manual', crunch your numbers... I know it is correct...

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, I have told everyone it it still not complete and i have a few thing to correct and add.

But I appreciate you letting me know

Thanks

Gary

Yes,  I PMed him and told him You caught that and I was correcting the reversal on the calculator. Also apologized for the mistake in the reversal.

Told him at this point to cut the hinges loose from the door turn the door where those vents were on the bottom and re-weld the hinges

Thanks Dave

Gary

Thank you locovet for being understanding.   I corrected that issue an will work to get it finished.  I wanted to make an easy to use RF calculator for anyone wanting to build a smoker. I want to make it the best it can be.  Members reading this are welcome to give me input. It is in an excel format and I realize not everyone can open it up. Maybe I can fix that as well.

I'll be looking forward to watching your build as it progresses.

Gary

Not a problem gary. We are going to keep the top vents like Dave said but probably only end up using the middle one. We still haven't cut the bottom drafts yet so we are ok there. Thanks for looking and checking over.

Gary, at least you could go up and help him correct the openings. After all it's not that far from East Texas to Oregon. Since everybody is reading this, let me thank you for all the help you have given me. It's hard getting started on the right track with a new forum and it's folks like you, with all of your experience who make it enjoyable. Joe
