Pros - Well insulated, Great results(when working)
Cons - Made in china, Can't get replacemant parts for the heating element, Seal on door not that great, Had to do repairs on burned out connectors
I got my 40" smoker in 07 at a Sam's club for $100. It was a floor sample that has a damaged plug and they had it on a price reduction. It overall is a good starter unit for the home chef. The unit I have has a solid SS door with no window. Why on earth they put a window on the latest model is a waste. What are you going to see? SMOKE! The wood tray is tiny on the new one. My tray is about 6"x8" the new one is about the size of a cigarette pack. I have seen on some forums that they are buying the bigger tray for their smokers. I have also read about smokers dying within a year and the customer service at Masterbuilt telling them that they cant repair the unit and it is done. Well this happened to me about a year ago. I drilled out the 30 rivets on the back of the unit and inspected the wiring. I found that the slip connector on the heating element was burnt. I spliced a new piece of wire in and replaced the connector and it has worked ever since. The control unit plug has given me headache's as well. The display unit plugs into the cabinet with a small 4 pin connector. That connection will need attention sooner or later. I had to use WD-40 and the smallest jeweler screwdriver to scrape the connections on both sides. I figured this out after the unit just shut off in the middle of running and it would give me issues when I would try to reset the cooking program. A bit of silicone grease may help keep this connection from corroding. I believe that Masterbuilt should have a better quality for a $400+ smoker. I bit the bullet and invested in a Cookshack SM-160 (Made in USA) that has a 2 year warranty. I bought the "demo"smoker at the NRA show for a great price and I'm waiting for it to get delivered. If you get the Masterbuilt buy the extended warranty for 3 years. At least you'll get your money back if it dies.
Pros - Set temp, time, add wood chips, and just wait
Cons - None
Heard about it for a friend and had read articles and other reviews. So I purchase the 40" Masterbuilt unit from Sam's Club. We picked up on a Thursday evening, seasoned the unit on Friday afternoon, and used while doing yard work on Saturday. By far the easiest unit I've used to smoke meat in and to cleanup in my twenty years of smoking meat. We loved it!
Pros - Easy to use
Cons - Temp probe is off
I have had mine for alittle over a month and so far love it. Very easy to use and setup.
i have the MES 30" and i love it !! i'm a long time smoker / griller and i hated tending a charcoal smoker for 14 or 15 hrs , it just wasn't fun anymore . this unit is very easy to use and the product comes out great everytime
Pros - Easy to maintain steady temp.
Cons - Have to add wood chips pretty frequent
I got this smoker on sale last year and I love it! It makes smoking very easy. Has room to cook a lot food. The cool thing is that it has a remote control and a built in meat probe, so I can check the meat temp at any time if I am only cooking one piece of meat. I can also change cooking temp at from the couch if I need to. I was hesitant to go electric but a buddy of mine had one and it is awesome. I highly recommend it if you want to cook great food with a small chance of a mistake.
great value eazy to use.
Pros - Ease of use, consistant performance.
Cons - Creating smoke when smoking at low temps is difficult.
I am new to smoking and this is the first electric smoker I have used. The MES is great when it comes to maintaining temps, just set it and it takes care of itself(temp wise).
The only proble I encountered is when smoking at temps below 250, say at 200 or 225, the heat element did not come on enough to keep the wood chips producing smoke.
I had to constantly work at producing smoke.
My fix for this was to purchase a Smoke Daddy, now I have all the smoke I need. Even this isn't a set and forget process. The Smoke Daddy needs to be checked every 1 or 2 hours to see if it needs more chips/pellets, but still much better than what the MES does on its on.
Now, smoking is a much nicer experience.
Pros - Easy And Cheap To Use
Cons - Dont have anything except the high temp limit of 275'
Set and forget up to 6 - 8 hours using The-Amaz-N smoke generator.
There isn't anything you can't smoke.
