I now there are variables, but how long should a load of charcoal last. I haven't tried the minion method yet. Should one load last several hours or will I need to reload for more time? The basket is 8"wideX8"longX7"deep. Iam using Kingsford and oak.
Thanks for the advice. I don't rely on the gauge that is on the grill, all it is good for is plugging the hole. I'm using a "Taylor" temp gauge that I assume is correct. I will try the "minion method".
I'm new to this so I've spent a little more than average this year. I've bought a new smoker along with the gadgetry, which keeps increasing. I'm not married so this isn't a problem.LOL
I have just started smoking. I tried getting a fire going and tried to maintain the temp. I thought while doing this I would smoke something while doing it. I got a temp of about 250 when I through the meat to it. Naturally the temp dropped while doing this. After this the temp would not stay...
The smoke I lose is not heavy. The temps fluctuate quite a bit. It is in no way what could be called stable. It was a little breezy when I was doing this. I'm using mainly charcoal and adding a chunk of wood after it gets going good.
I've noticed that when smoking that some smoke, not alot, is coming out around the edge of the lid. Is this a problem that needs fixing or is it common? I can't download a photo, it's the barrel type with sidebox.
Thanks, thats what I'll do. One thing should be mentioned, that when working with this material, be careful with edges. When I got through I looked like I'd been in a knife fight and lost. LOL
My dad use to take the grill, after cooling, and laying it in the grass and letting them set over night. They cleaned up pretty good. Don't know if re-seasoning would be needed.
I have a cooking thermometer, can I just lay the probe on the grill to get an accurate temp. What is a good replacement thermometer. Also I am making a charcoal basket and was wondering if it should be a certain size.
