    High Temp Paints

I used the quart of Rustoleum on my firebox and cooking chamber.  It works great for the cooking chamber with no problems at all.  I've been happy with the results there.

    High Temp Paints

I've not been able to find anything that would stay on my firebox, and I've tried a variety of different paints.  The cooker is fine, but the firebox peels and flakes if there is any rain or other moisture in the air.  I've finally decided to insulate and box it in with aluminum and be done with...

    1st Rib Competition

The rub is mixture of a Emeril cajun rub, Paula Deen, and traditional southern african american rub.  I've never been around when she makes the rub, so I am not sure what is in it. For the sauce, we start out with either Sonny's BBQ Sauce, or a Sonny's Clone...

    1st Rib Competition

This is the first time I've been back over here in a while.  Overall it was an awesome experience and I had a great time.  We had 11 teams entered, and overall we finished 4th.  We would have been on the podium, but one judge completely railed on us.  Our average score out of 10 was around a 7...

Custom Smoker Builds, Pics of all of them.

Wow, great reference for building.  I'm in the process of modifying my smoker this offseason, so hopefully when its done I'll have some better pics for you.

M416 Military Trailer into smoker/grill * Nearly Done*

If you keep the cooler full of ice/beverages it should help out with your back weight.  You can also get some RV style jacks to drop down if you need some extra support back there. If your firebox is level with the smoker, you'll have flow problems and the heat will just sit there.  Like Matt...

    NC Ribfest June 10-13, 2010

If any of you plan to be in or around Winston-Salem, NC in the middle of June come on by the Ribfest at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. Its a growing festival, with competition teams from all over the US. For the first time this year, they are offering an amateur division called "King of the...

How much fuel do you burn?

Large smokers basically need wood only to maintain their temps. I get hardwood slabs from the local lumber yard and use 23-30 lbs per smoke.

    More pics of new smoker

Cool. I was just worried some of that smoke would escape to freedom without ever gracing the meat.

    More pics of new smoker

Looks good. Is the door to the firebox open? It looks like you may be losing some smoke out the firebox instead of making its way through the smoker.

You could go with a larger diameter stack. My original calculations called for a 4" pipe that was almost 3ft long, but once I expanded it to a 6" pipe it cut down to 1ft.

    Worm Composting (PiCS)

So after reading this thread, I'm inspired to do some worm composting of my own. I'm fascinated with the flow through design, so I wont have to constantly be changing the bedding. When you designed your boxes, is there some sort of plans you followed or a website that would offer suggestions/tips?

    Trailer smoker build

I had to go tandem with the weight of everything I had planned for it. All total, I spent ~$1500 on the whole setup. Granted, quite a bit of it I got for free, but I was impressed with how cheap I was able to do it. As long as you dont overload the weight of the axle, you should be ok with...

    Wood type?

I use primarily red and white oak all the time. It works really well. I do agree though that you need another flavor wood added to it, but it will supply quite a bit of heat.

    Trailer smoker build

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ad.php?t=79219 Here's a link to my reverse flow build from last year. I didnt have a rib box on it. Looking back on it, I'm kind of glad I didnt. My tank is large enough that I dont have to worry about major changes in temperature and the ribs I've...

    1st Rib Competition

It's a very limited garnish, but the rules are generally pretty vague as this is the first year for the amateur competition. The sauce will be judged separately, and I think they are "celebrity" judges from the local tv and radio stations. I'll be taking my big wood fired rig, but will be up...

    1st Rib Competition

A few buddies and I signed up for the Twin City Rib Fest amateur competition next June http://www.twincityribfest.com/ I've always smoked for large groups, but never in an all out competition. Anyone have any suggestions, or lessons learned from past competitions? It is a pretty good deal...

    Looking to cut my teeth......

Welcome to the group. I'd give you a year or smoking before you decide to go bigger. It never fails, once you get the bug it controls you. You'll be wanting bigger and bigger each time.

    Score!

Congrats on the score. This past spring I started a dozen or so pecan trees from the nut. I planted them last week. In about 10 years or so they should be big enough to cut and use.

Trouble with fire - may be the type of wood?

Similar to what RaceyB said, follow the old boy scout fire starting method. Use really small pieces/shavings first and slowly add slightly larger pieces to get the size fire you want. If you stack all your wood in first, and then light it you are more apt to get the creosote. Adding takes a...
