Hi,

I am looking at taking advantage of the Cyber Week deals going on now. I can pick up a non-wifi GMG Daniel Boone for $399 or a Traeger Jr. Elite for $387.

I have read that GMG's are fantastic and that Traeger's have dropped in quality. Is there other reasons to pick the GMG over the Traeger? Or vice versa?

I would like to use it to smoke/grill steaks as well as smoke pork, beef and fatties. Let me know. I only have a few hours left!

My impression: GMG. Full disclosure: I have a bit of a bias as a Jim Bowie owner. And I love it. Well made, heavy -- and it holds temp pretty well even here in MN (with a thermal blanket).

A friend paid nearly $3k for a stainless steel Traeger in their early days. It rusted pretty badly. They would do nothing for him. When I check out a Traeger I happen to see in a store, I'm not impressed with the weight and quality.

Now that I've effectively bashed Traegers, there are a lot of people with them who are very happy.

After a lot of research (I intend to buy just one smoker in my life) I picked GMG for the combination of quality, cost, and convenience (I'm not one who will sit still all day to adjust vents and manage temperature - the over-the-net WiFi access is wonderful!). That said, pellet style doesn't give the full smoke flavor of a stick burner. The Amaz-N tubes help out what that. I got the JB instead of the DB because my friend pointed out that having that extra real estate is valuable -- and I've found he's right. The WiFi can be a bit finicky at times; it lost contact with the server half-way through my last brisket smoke, for example, and I don't know of a way to get it re-connected without re-booting the smoker.

Anyway, hopefully this helps. Good luck and don't look back!!!

I have an Amaz-N tube for my MES 30 so am familiar with the difference between pellet and stick burner. I have a barrel that I will keep but I was hoping to do Tri Tips and such on a pellet grill.

My other option is to pick up a Camp Chef SmokePro DLX on sale for $499 and add a sear box at some point later. That would eliminate 2 grills.

FYI, the smoke profile between a pellet grill and a tube smoker is completely different. A pellet grill produces a very light, but sweet smoke. A tube produces a much stronger, but IMO harsher smoke.

I think you made a wise choice. I have both an older Traeger, and a GMG. The Traeger controller in my unit was junk, and I had nothing but problems with it. The GMG controller is significantly better than the Traeger. To be fair, I do not know if Traeger has improved their controllers since 2009, but in order to make the Lil' Tex as good as the GMG, I had to spend another $200 on a Pellet Pro PID, which brought the total cost of the unit to a cost of twice that of the GMG.

I did my first cook on the GMG and while I had success, it was not without issues. I purchased the wifi model and was able to connect directly to the grill, but I was not able to connect the grill to my home wifi. I called support and was told the following:
Make sure you can see the grill from the location of your router - Check, I am able to connect to my grill standing next to the router.
The wifi name or password cannot have special characters - I created a special guest network for the JPCGuest with simple alphanumeric password.
The grill does not connect to iPhone hot spots - Really? You kidding me that this is OK?
iOS app will not give you a drop down list of wifi's it sees - Once again, really?

I was never able to actually get the wifi connection but I was able to cook my meal with the direct connect. I have another call into support today, but there is ONE GUY who supports the apps.

So far, not very impressed.

An update:

I exchanged emails with GMG and was told that a new controller board would be sent to me. It arrived yesterday and was a quick install. I was able to update firmware and attache to my home wifi so all of my technical issues were solved. I still think the app needs some work but as a SW manager by trade, all SW needs work!

I am now completely happy with my GMG and looking forward to smoking a prime rib on Monday!

I just went through this same debate and went with the gmg Daniel Boone. Do a google search and you will find some good info. Gmg is something like 50 lbs heavier than the comparable traeger, gmg has a pid controller, gmg uses all stainless hardware.
