The first thing that came to mind was Himalayan salt blocks. So I bet it's used for thermal regulation. Like a water pan, only different. But then, it doesn't seem like enough to make much of a difference.
Maybe it's for smoking salt?
As others have said, bigger is better and shorter is better. Best is not to use one at all if possible. But if you have to, hold the cord where it plugs into the outlet, if it gets warm to the touch, keep an eye on it. If it gets noticably hot = big red flag! "DANGER, WILL ROBINSON!"
I haven't had any complaints.
And as a matter of fact, I used it yesterday to smoke two batches of wings. Try this one, too! Just add it to a bowl with your wings and fridge for an hour or more:

Once in awhile, it gets into the teens. Usually it hovers right around freezing.
And hey. Before I bought my electric ECB, I was lusting for a gas smoker... I was told you can't control the temperature with propane at my altitude.
But again, no complaints here.
