Here's what I did. Made a charcoal basket out of expanded metal with a grill grate for a base. I ran 3 inch carriage bolts thru the grate to act as legs. At the base of the legs, I attached a cheapy wally world pizza pan to act as a ash catcher. By making legs,it keeps the basket up off the...
Yes the leak can make a difference given wind conditions and temp outside. I used a grinder and a straightedge, and a cautious eye, and worked my way around the rim. Also check your lid, it may be warped just a scosche, that it doesn't sit on the lip flat. This is where a rope gasket would work...
How straight of a cut on the lip of the drum? Mine did same thing, then I relized air was leaking past the Weber lid and drum lip, because I cut a little crooked. Just a thought. I also sealed my fittings at the barrell with high temp sealant.
Keep talkin, please, I have seen a few threads on here about wiring a PID, but is it really that easy to someone who has basic electronic knowledge. I would love to run a PID! It would make so much more sense to me than using a hotplate or oven controls. These guys that are using the Brinkmann...
I finally have started my 1951 IH fridge conversion, but I am kind of lost on the heat source. I really would like to use a replacement smoker element, but not sure how to control the temp. In these forums there is much talk about PID's, and I do understand how they work. My problem is I am not...
I have recently acquired a IH fridge, and am currently designing my build. I am kind of torn between electric or propane. I am leaning towards propane, but I am scared I will be filling my tank every 2 or 3 smokes. Can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much gas I would go through? I...
Brian, I do not have a welder so, I used conduit nuts. I wonder if there could be enough airleak there. I hate to take it to a welder after I have already painted it. Any ideas?
Maverick ET 7 in middle of grate. You know TravmaA, YOU MAY HAVE A GOOD POINT! When the UDS smokes, alot of the smoke billows from under the lid's edge. I cut the top lip off with a grinder, and it isn't really square. Maybe I should try a rope gasket under the lid!
I recently built a UDS, and I am having troubles keeping the temp down. It likes to ride right about 300 degrees. That is with the 2 caps on, and ball valve closed, and Weber top vent 1/2 open. I am using the minion method, and starting out with 8-12 lit briquettes. Any ideas?
I personally use a stainless wire basket. It lets the ash fall freely so that the fire will not be snubbed. Plus,I feel that it allows better air flow. Just my opinion! Very light and sturdy
Can anyone tell me the diameter of the Weber lid that I need for a UDS build? Also if you know the diameter of a 55 gallon barrel, that would be great!
