I want to do the ammo can mod too.
I used a 30 cal can. If i was to do it again, I would use a 50 cal and 3/4 pipe and valve  It works good the way it is. Works better for hot smoke than cold. Not as much draw when cold smoking.

If you deside to do a ammo can. bring your A game when you get ready to weld on it. Even a good welder needs to think A game before they strick an arc. I wish i had had solid wire instead of flux-core for that. Oh well a big hole means you have to fill it.

David

side note. you can use 3/4 pipe and electric nuts to hold it on.

Guys when it comes to an external smoke generator for hot and cold smoking i'm sold on Smoke Daddy's generator. It's not free but it's worth it.  http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/140797/amnps-smoke-daddy-myths

Well farmer let's get the show on the road and see that lid cut off.

Tomorrow. Thanks guys.

I got lucky I found a piece of expanded metal 9ga. 32" x 10ft.. For 20$...
Sweet, I am thinking about that basket on ebay.

Should this coating all burn out?

...and yes that'll burn out just fine.

Burn that sucker out, put a wire brush on a drill or grinder and sand it down well.   You might want to sand down the edges of where you cut it off as well.   Looking good so far farmer.

Found out my hole saw is broke.

Have to get new one when I get pipe and ball valve.

Hope tomorrow.

No harbor freight close. Will be going to lowes.

How long should the burn out last?

Looks like you got a start Farmer. Build a big fire and give it a good burn. You'll be good to go.
David

And I should be able to use a dome lid if I find one.

I sand blasted mine. then filled the basket with scrap wood and coal.. if you have a bunch of limbs or things i'd put a lut in and set it on fire. Do everything you can before you build the fire. that way you don't get as dirty when you have your head in the barrel. Also after the burn out. when you get it good and clean rub it down with oil. and do a test burn with coal. it will season it and you can see how well it responds to adjustment. When i did mine. ig got the coals going good for a couple of hour all vents open. Then started closing the vents to see what happened.

Happy smoken.
