Super-newbie here to learn about smoking.  My boyfriend is the oven-baked rib expert in the family, I'm the griller.  I feel like we could really take things to the next level by learning to smoke.

My grill is a little Charbroil Patio Bistro electric grill, and I love that thing to death.  I just want it to work when I want to grill.  No more can't start, it's too cold for propane, just started, ran out of propane, can't get flames, clogged with grease- I'd had it.  After struggling with a Weber propane grill for years I bought the new electric grill, put the old propane grill out at the end of my driveway, a guy stopped within five minutes and I ran out to tell him it worked, I just hated it, and off it went.  That was three years ago.

I'm pretty into gadgets, and started off with a remote meat thermometer, which was okay, (of course I can also tell by touch- but as I said- I love gadgets) but when it died after a couple seasons I replaced it with an iGrill thermometer.  I've been having a good time with that, especially with my specialty, raspberry-glazed pork tenderloin.  I use it more for fun; I'm not dependent on it.

So- the hunt for the right smoker is on.  Somewhat limited budget, and I need to save up a little.  I've done a lot of reading already, enough to know that I'm not going to get away with electric.  Since I despise propane, that leaves charcoal.  I'm slightly intimidated, but I can read and follow directions and I'm not afraid to dive right in and experiment.  I'm thinking the 18.5 WSM might be a good place to start.

I plan on doing the e-course this week!

Welcome ,Nanci. Glad to have you in the Family . Your choice of a Weber 18.5 is a good one...

look at the threads on the Ugly Drum Smokers.Rather inexpensive and easy to build...lots of good reviews and recipes for them. You can build one for as little as $50.

Be sure and get the Husband away from the Oven with the Ribs,(yuk) and show him how good Ribs should taste...

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums.http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/a/terms-of-service

If you need any help roaming around the forums....just holler!  Happy to help out!

Hi Kat, I do have one question.  I did a search about Q-view and read the tutorial.  I'm not sure what the difference is between Q-view and just attaching photos from either my computer or an image hosting site like Photobucket is, though.  Is there a difference??

I _did_ read your site rules- some are quite unique!  (And I approve!)  I'm a mod on a vastly different site- I will try my best to not do anything wrong here.  Thanks!

You wont do anything wrong....there are just a few things like Politics and Religion that we try and steer clear of...so there are NO arguments.

We do try and stay family friendly.

The images are best done when a member can just look at your thread and stay here...instead of clicking a link to go look at the q-views....of course pictures.  Personally....if I have to leave and go look else where...I don't read that post.  Hope that is "clearer than mud!"
