Came home from work this morning and fired up my new kamado, I threw in some hickory chunks and let it get going for about half an  hour. My Kamado settled in right around 350-375, I put two chickens that were just dry rubbed on beer can chicken holders without the beer can. Honestly I'm not sure how long it cooked because my wife and I went for a walk with our son and then I watched the maverick till IT165 while playing with my son.
Here it is finnished, the chicken was most and juicy. The rub I put on coiuld have used a bit more salt and maybe some paprika for a nicer color. It was just some misses dash garlic& onion which I forgot had no salt.

I am really liking the Kamado so far everything comes out great. This is much easier than my last smoker which needed tending constantly. This is the Ron Popeil of smokers just set it and forget it lol. Once I have the vents set for the correct temp you can just walk away for hours.

That's cool , Onewondershow. Those little Chickys look really plump , no trouble with juiciness there and even the 'last part over the fence' is done nicely. LOL

Being the ever wanting , I would like to try a Ceramic Smoker. What size and type of stand did you get???

Keep doin' what you're doin'. Keep you coals hot and...

The whole setup including stand came together. I got it from Costco for about 600. I believe the grill grates are 18.5 inches wide with 2 levels. they advertise 596 sq inches. so far I love it,it is very easy to control temps and just walk away. It's the vision grills classic. Size wise for reference I had no problem cooking 9 pound brisket.

It's not really like a Weber kettle because the techniques used are different. The ceramic grill is much more efficient than a kettle because it has much thicker walls for a more sealed environment which helps keep food moist. It burns for much longer on less charcoal. It also is capable of much higher temps. It weighs way more than a kettle so you will not be easily moving this wherever you go. Between the grill and the stand it's over 200#s. You can see in the one photo it's well over 700 degrees. I like that the tables fold down and it came with a nice heavy cover.

OWS, thanks for the look. As I said , the 'spoiled' part of me wants one to play with although I know better

I like wood-bruning , so for my goto Smoker , it's -

Smokers like these...so I shouldn't complain. The "Smoke gods " were good to me.

As always ,have fun and...

I have several buddies and a brother with ceramic egg cookers.  I like some of the features on these vision cookers over the primo and BGE.  A bit spendy but puts out great cooks.

I figure it won't take that long to pay for itself in charcoal savings lol

I recently got the Big Red Kamado Kooker and like it a lot.  A few handfuls of coal lasts several hours especially @ 225* and lower.

I was wondering if you could give me some pictures/ measurements of the fire box. I have a 1969 CasaQ that I am restoring. The firebox is shot and I need to replace it. The original hung on a small lip that is cast in the body of the smoker, no feet to support it. These aren't made anymore and replacement parts are not available so I am trying to retrofit .

I looked at the large BGE's  firebox, but the diameter at the top it too big by 1/2". So the feet wouldn't hit the bottom of the body without shimming.

I've been reading some good things recently about the Char-griller Akorn Kamando clone they sell at Lowes & Sam's Clubs.  Looked at one in the store the other day, but I really don't need another smoker or grill to follow me home.  I even found a whole sub-forum devoted to the Akorn   http://kamadoguru.com/viewforum.php?f=22

$299 at Lowes (and I bet they go on sale around fathers day or July 4th)

Do you still like your Vision Kamado?
We are headed to Costco tomorrow to get one. $569.00. It includes the 'nest' stand, cover, 2 racks and 2 side tables. Anyone else using this brand?
I love it more every time I use it. The more cooks I do with it the better my control gets. Look at some of my other cooks http://www.smokingmeatforums.comhttps://smokingmeatforums.com/members/60836"quote-container">Quote:

The reviews on these are good. I checked one out at bjs and it's no where near the quality of my vision but it is only half the price. It is a good bit smaller than the vision.

Kamado cooking is great, and almost all of them need little tweaks or mods to make them better.

I agree, the quality is no where near that of the higher priced ceramic cookers.  But for 1/2 the price it's a great option for someone on a budget.  The design is a little different in the way they handle the fire chamber also.  Like most Chargriller models there are mods that people have developed to improve the performance & value of this entry level "egg" shaped smoker.

If I have another smoker follow me home, I think the wife would make me sleep on the porch with my collection!  I did think about it for a minute or two though.

Ok. I got it and it's assembled!

The only thing i'm not sure about is where to put the Heat Resistant Ceramic Plate. Is that to be used for indirect cooking? Right now I put it on the lower rack and figured i could cook indirect on the upper rack... ???

The exploded view they included is whacked so i can't tell where it goes.

No cooking today. DH is going to get lump charcoal tomorrow and we are going to try some grass fed steaks then.

oh, did anyone get touch up paint from Vision? I might have read that somewhere else. I have at least one tiny chip on the lid.
