How's it going? Sorry for the newbie questions. I tried searching but no help. I'm new to the forum and just acquired a General Air Corp fridge and I have a couple questions. 1: Can I use/leave the original insulation? Do I need to take the interior down to bare metal? Can I leave the original coating, or can I just sand it and paint over it?. Thank you for your help, and I look forward to finished my build!! Thanks for your help!

I'm new to the forum and just acquired a General Air Corp fridge and I have a couple questions. 1: Can I use/leave the original insulation? To be on the safe side I would remove the old insulation and install new insulation.  Do I need to take the interior down to bare metal? Remove all plastic, insulation and foam.  Can I leave the original coating, or can I just sand it and paint over it?. You can do either  Thank you for your help, and I look forward to finished my build!! Good afternoon...From Nor Cal. I've gone through the fridge build section and have found some good info. I've been taking the fridge down to metal the last couple of weeks(whenever I can). I'm pretty sure I'm going to be using Super Wool to insulate and a silicone seal for the door. However, I am stuck on my heat/smoke source. My question to u ladies/gentlemen is, do I place the firebox under the fridge or use an offset firebox? I would like this to be a charcoal smoker. I already have a vertical brinkman. Is there advantages to one or the other? At some point I would like to smoke cheese. I'll be posting pictures as soon as I can. Thanks for the input and have a Great Weekend, Cheers!!!

Hello DirtyDan and welcome to the fun and frustration.

The good thing is that many people have already gone through the frustration for you and can save you a lot of time, trial and error is the name of the game and reporting your sucesses and failures.  WITH PICTURES!  WE LIKE PICTURES!  You haven't given us much info to go on.  I can't tell from your post if you are using an old fridge or new.  If an old fridge I hope you haven't "sanded" the internal enameled coating.  Either way NO paint on the inside.  The outside should just need to be "keyed" to accept new paint.  Post some picts. so we can help further.  here is a link to a charcoal fired fridge conversion.  http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/120281/charcoal-fridge-smoker-plan-updated-with-wip-picks-5-30-13   Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

Sorry about that. Hopefully these pics come out. I haven't grinded the interior of the inner shell yet. Unfortunately it looks like the previous owner used a couple coats of paint and it also has some rot from rust. If I can find a used break cheap enough I may try to make a new inner shell. If not, I'm thinking of lining the box with new sheet metal.

The fridge is a bit on the smaller side. I'll measure the dimensions when I get a chance.. Hope this gives u guys/gals a bit more insight on my project.

I'm thinking of matte black with pinstriping for the exterior. I'd also like to bend some pipe to make headers for the exhaust vents. Please, keep the suggestions coming along...Thanks for the help.

Hello Dan.  The picts are hard to make out from here.  It looks like an old fridge.  If so it should be enameled inside.  Clean the interior well with steel wool and then wash it out well.  Allow to dry and then season your smoker  Even if there was rust on the interior after you season your smoker with cooking oil and smoke that problem will be solved.  As you clean it with the wool, if you see paint coming off then you are right and some yoyo painted the inside.  ALL that paint MUST come off.  Good Luck.  Keep Smokin!
