Design questions. I'm getting ready to make cuts.

Does it mater which end the drain is on?

My tank has a hole that is in the perfect location for the drain, But it also happens to be at the end I was thinking of putting the firebox. Only reason is whoever cut the motor off did a poor job then tried to weld who knows what to the top. I was going to simply cut off a side and then use steel plate to close it up again. Essentially making one end flat. I'm even considering doing a "deluxe" style with a warmer.

How big do I make the door?

Width is not a problem so much but height is. Do you do roughly 1/4 of the tank? Overall diameter is about 21-22 inches.

Finally, can anyone give me some help with the calculator? It's simple for the most part the difficulty is figuring the opening for the fire box.

I've got a 60 gallon air compressor tank if it makes a difference.

Nother question. I may be able to get my hands on a 33 gallon compressor tank as well. Would it be as good to use as a fire box as getting steel plate and welding? It would definately be easier and more cost effective but if I'm going to burn alot of wood or loose alot of heat I'd rather go with the box.

The end opposite of the firebox would work best where it isn't quite as hot.

The door for the smoke chamber? That is up to you.

Give yourself 4 - 5" above the RF plate for your first cooking grate. That would also be where to start the door. I cut mine to the 12 o'clock position (top, center). If I had to do it again I might cut them to 1 o'clock.

Roughly 40 sq. in. is what you need for the opening into the smoke chamber from the firebox. If you built a square firebox, I would have the top of the opening 3.5 - 4" from the bottom of the smoke chamber.

Awesome, thanks for the info. The door suggestion especially.

Any thoughts on using 1/4 steel plate vs the air compressor tank for the firebox itself?

For the grates/baffle. I know there's a 4 inch gap between the baffle and the cooking grate, but how far above the firebox opening should the baffle be? Can it be right above or flush with the opening or should it be higher? I've got about 2 inches of play if I want my grate to be at the halfway point of the tank (which I do)
