So guys/gals, first off, thanks for the great forum.  I've been reading for a bit and love the environment and encouragement of the forum.

I've done some indirect cooking with ribs on my gas grill - with some smoke, but haven’t been able to “smoke” anything.

Anyway, I'm looking at buying a smoker.  Money is a concern - not only about cost  but about how frequently will I use it.  I'm hoping one of the first few  batches come out soooooo good that I have to smoke a lot and can upgrade, but for now need to stay under $200.

I've eliminated charcoal/wood burners as I just don't have the time to baby sit it constantly.  Beer in hand or not, I will have to squeeze the smokes into a day of home maintenance type stuff so hoping to get where I can just check it every hour so.  I do think it will take more attention than that the first few go abounds.  (an ET-732 is on the way).

So I'm pretty sold on the idea of propane.  Something along the lines of the Masterbuilt 30" and/or Master Forge double door.  While I'm leaning towards the MF http://www.lowes.com/pd_190449-9539...rentURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=master+forge&facetInfo=

Those are the only 2 in this space that I've been able to look at locally - the MF seems a bit "tighter" and has a much better wood and water tray.  Not sure about the double doors as someone here said that on theirs it just lets more smoke out.

Is there something else I should be considering – or am I on the right track?

Thanks guys, looking forward to posting my first Q-view!

See, you guys already helped confirm what I thought -  the Master Forge appears to be top rated round here.   I'm guessing the #1 rating is more  about how many folks have them vs the performance.  That said it is a price thing and after digging in I don't see any in the price range that sound as functional.

Welcome to SMF. Glad to have you aboard.

When I first found this site I was looking and lurking and also needing a smoker that fit my

budget and was almost hands free.

From everything I read here, I ended up buying the MES 40. It is electric and works great for everything.

I also purchased an AMNPS from Todd Johnson at A-Maze-N-Smoker. It works great for cold and hot smokes.

Check it out. Can't hardly go wrong.

Happy Smokin'

Welcome to the SMF! Lots of great people with tons of knowledge that will have you smoking like a pro in no time. From what it sounds like you want to do and without spending to much $, I would agree with the electric smoker like others have said. Good luck on your 1st purchase.

Thanks for the warm welcome all.  To those of you recommending electric - that would be preferable, but I also want to use t this when camping and no AC power available except via an inverter or generator.  I'd hate to run the generator for hours on end and don't have enough battery for the inverter so was leaning strongly to  propane.

I compared the MF and MB's in person and I think the MF has a better build so that is what I'll get.  Expect some Q-View soon and thanks again for the advice!
