Couple of 24 ounce Porter house steaks. With Q-view. (or should I say G-view?)

Caught a pretty good sale at the local supermarket. Porterhouse for $5.99/lb. Got a package with 2 steaks at just over 3lbs total for just over $18. Considering a 24oz Porterhouse would cost a LOT more than that in a restaurant around here, I was OK with the splurge. Seasoned them lightly with garlic powder, onion powder, celery salt and black pepper. Added a splash of W'shire sauce on one side only.

Here they are having a little nap before hitting the grill.

The "grill", is really just the coal pan from my ECB. One and a half chimney loads of Kingsford and some mesquite chips and she was rocket hot and gave just a kiss of mesquite flavor. .

It was nice and hot, so after 5 mins on one side they looked like this:

Once the steaks came off to have another nap, I put on the veggie du Jour. Supplemented with vitamin oink of course.

At the first flip:

Some bonehead (yeah, me) put the Chianti in the cooler, so emergency thermal management was required. (only for comic effect, it was only on there for a few seconds.)

Tried to get a good Bear View, but the cell phone camera isn't the greatest.

Didn't use the new ET 732, but the "poke test" told me they were mid rare, just like we like them.

All in all, for an impromptu picnic in the park, I'd say it was pretty good. The flavor of the steaks was perfect. The filet side was incredible, but the strip side was a little tough and gristly. I know that's the nature of the beast, especially compared to the filet,  but these seemed just a little tougher than the norm. Given the price, however, we were pretty happy.

The bacon wrapped asparagus were freaking incredible.

MMMMMMMmmmmmm, I love a nice Big Steak !!!!!

That BearView looks fine from here!!

Done just right too!!

Thanks for the views!!!

I love the makeshift grill. Great idea that works as good as anything else
It worked perfectly, and I like the fact that the ECB continues to prove it's worthiness. As for "makeshift grills" one of the best, and most memorable meals I've ever had was one late fall day in a marina. I was working on my boat, and a friend of mine came by with some venison chops from a deer he'd taken the week before. We scratched our heads to figure out how to cook them, then saw an old refrigerator next to the dumpster. Grabbed one of the shelves, found a couple cinder blocks and I remembered I had a bag of charcoal in the boat. I picked some wild onions from a field next to the marina and just tossed them on the coals under the chops to give a little flavor infusion. We sat there all afternoon, cooking venison over a hobo grill and drinking cheap beer. Just as the chops were done, a light snow started to fall. I can still taste that venison with the barest hint of roasted onion flavor...

Great looking meal. Love the asparagus - have you ever tried it with a balsalmic reduction? Amazing stuff
