My family is awesome. They all went in together and got me a WSM for an early Christmas present. I'm freaking excited! Will be seasoning it this weekend for my first smoke the following weekend. Probably smoking a boston butt for my first go around. Pics will be posted, don't worry!

Very cool - congrats! Just FYI you don't need to season WSM's, since there is no goop or exposed metal in them they are pretty much ready to go right out of the box. If your concerned about anything though you could just run it for an hour before tossing the meat on.

I know the directions didn't say anything about it, but there is an oil coating over most everything inside the smoker that I wanted to burn off. Thanks guys, I'm super excited!

Like Johnny said, you don't need to season it, but if I were you I would fire it up & see how to control the temps. Put a couple of therms on the grates & monitor the therm temps against the factory therm in the dome. You will find there are cooler spots on the bottom grate & the top grate is hotter, also around the sides it's hotter. You will also find that after you get it up to temp with all the vents open, you will only need 1 vent in the bottom about 1/4 to 1/2 way open the other 2 shut & the top vent wide open. If you want to maintain 225 start shutting down the bottom vents when you get to 200. If you let the temp get away from you it takes a long time to bring it back down. This is the perfect time to experiment with it. You will get a feel for controlling the temps with no food in it, so if you screw up all your loosing is some charcoal & wood chunks. Also when you load it up mix in some wood with the charcoal & light about 6 to 8 briquettes to put on the unlit charcoal. This is called the minnion method & with a full ring you can maintain 225 for 18 - 20 hours. Good luck!

Congrats!! From everything I've read, the WSM tends to run a little hot for the first few smokes due to the shiny interior, so your "seasoning" process will be beneficial as well as educational. Good luck and can't wait to see pics of your butt! Wait...let me rephrase that...

Just fire it up. It works fantastic. I just got one about 6-8 months ago and I can't stop smoking on it. Bets of luck. Send some Q-views.

Thanks for the advice, that will probably take care of whatever it is that's on the grates and such too. About how much charcoal to add to the ring? To the top of it? Middle? Thanks again, will report back here with my findings.

Looks like you're in the Medical field? If so, you'll need it , as you now have "Obsessive Smoking Disorder"

Well it won't be MY butt, but... you get the idea.

Congrats!!! You can also add a middle grate and a probe hole. Do a search on mods to the WSM. Just a little braggin' won 1st place in a rib comp with my WSM!!!
Yeah I've been checking them out and already have some ideas. The probe holes are definitely going to be first.

Thanks again everyone. I've been reading pretty much non-stop on here since I got it, haha.
