Had an issue where the pipe nipple used for the ball valve was a tad loose in the hole that was drilled for it and it would just get worse over time due to opening and closing the ball valve, so I ran to the Depot and snagged up a couple things and fixed it.  Now it is snug as can be and isnt going anywhere.  Here is what I did:

I got a cheap 3/4 x 1 1/2" pipe nipple (3/4 x 1" would have been better):

I also went to my local Fastenal and got a pack of 1" stainless steel washers and attached them as you can see below.  It is really tight now and won't budge, so mission accomplished.

Just wanted to pass it on as this is better than a weld to me since it will never budge and is completely removable with two pipe wrenches.

You can also buy a 3/4" pipe bushing and put it on the inside with 2-3 washers and tighten the ball valve on the outside. This method will probably be cheaper due to the less fitting and washers needed.

Thanks!  A UDS is on my list; I've got 2 barrels on the side of the house ready to start when I can scrape the time together.  I will remember your trick.

Are those washers galvanized or zinc plated?  Is zinc a problem?  Safety issues with food + heat?  Hmmmmm...

Hmm..not sure.  ill check tomorrow  i know they arent galvanized.

Just did some googling, shiny is usually zinc plated which is bad, so tomorrow im gonna make sure and if they are i am gonna swap them with steel or stainless.

Awesome.  Would love to not have to spend more $ on more washers.  I have to swing by the Depot tomorrow and see what they are.  I think I have some lime-a-way under the ole kitchen zinc ;)

I knew i would find what i was looking for on this forum. I was just thinking of how to attach the intake and vents with out a welder. Great post

When I was building mine I spent about two hours in Home Depot trying to figure out how to build my vents. I kept seeing the pics of all the guys that put the ball valves and the piping and all the stuff they put on them. This old guy that worked there had seen me pondering on it and he walked up and asked me what I was building. I told him and he just said "you should use magnets". I had no idea what he was talking about and he walked me to this display where he very strong magnets for two bucks a pack. He said I could just put them over the holes and slide them to whatever degree of open I wanted. That seemed way to simple and way not technical enough but I was too dumb and cheap for those ball valves and the pipe fittings so I bought nine packs for 18 bucks and went home and snapped them right over the holes. It works absolutely perfectly and could not be more efficient and cheap. I would have spent fifty or sixty bucks on ball valves and pipe. This was 18 and it took about fifteen seconds to put on. The guy told me "everything doesn't have to be complicated". He was sure right.

I have a question regarding the use of ball valves

Don't the ball valves have rubber seals in them?  I thought that they did.  Can't they melt from the heat?
