I finally found a food grade drum and I feel more comfortable using this drum instead of the othe drum I found.... SO, Is this liner hard to get out and what do you suggest I used to get it out? Knife, torch?? Does thickness of metal make a difference in performance?

Instead of "burn, wire brush",you might get better results if you get it sand blasted.Just a thought.
Paying someone else to sandblast it would be your best bet.  Or find an unlined drum.

The liners can be a real pain to get it out and really take the fun out of a UDS build.

I called around and most people want $125 an hour to blast with no minimum.. OUCH!! I can get a brand new liner less open head drum for 45.00 at a local distributor so I'm going to pile pallet wood in the other drum I have that was liner less but held palm oil and really try to burn out the smell and remnants.

heres a link to the picture on the liner less drum I already burned. The black stuff is smooth and I don't know if a burn out will remove it. If not I guess I'll just sink the $45 and buy a brand new drum, I really wanted to stay cheap on this

I understand your desire to save money, but I think you'd be happier in the long run if you just bought the unlined drum.  If you don't have them already, you may end up spending more than the $45 on masks, goggles, ear plugs gloves and wire wheels by the time you wire wheel the other one out.

And believe me, you need a GOOD mask.  Not just the little white ones at the hardware store.  I tried to use those the first time and I was coughing up bits of the liner for a week.

Good luck.

Oh, I just looked at your other thread.  I'd drill the intake holes and do a wood burnout on the inside of that barrel.  I don't think you have anything to worry about with the palm oil and a good fire might get rid of the smell.

where did you find the drum distributor that sells drums for that price? and how much extra is a lid for the drum?

cromag...call some painting places that specialize in spraying paint on things like water towers, the insides of large commercial vats...etc etc...they are MORE than happy to sandblast something like this..they spend 3/4 of their day in their sandblasting buildings..and will fit the drum in when they can do it.

I dropped mine off on a Friday afternoon..and got it back Monday afternoon.....it took them 20 minutes and cost me $15.00 to have it done.  WELL worth it..so I didn't have to burn, scrape, grind, COUGH...etc etc.

Drilled holes and did my burnout today and everything looks great!!! Going to take it to the carwash and hose it out then dry it really well to prevent rust before I paint

I had one with the orange liner and i couldnt get it out.  i burnt it out HOT...burnt ALL paint off the outside first time.  Liner was unscathed.  Went at it with grinder and wire wheel...knocked some off...burnt it again.  Then washed it and the liner was still largely intact...i gave up and bought a WSM

Agree...i tried it with the white dust mask...not fun.  You probably really need a respirator.  Since your head is in the stinking barrel while grinding away.  Not fun

CROMAG! you have certainly found a great source for drums! i just talked to the owner and get this, he has reconditioned unlined stainless steel closed head barrels for $50.00 each! 55 gallon of course. he said he has 100 in stock and more he can recondition.WHAT A DEAL! thanks for the lead on him.

I must have lucked out, My liner was mostly burned out after the first fire. I burned it hot for about 3 hours, had some friends over and drank beer while feeding the fire. the wire wheel got the rest out. then I had to burn a second fire because the bottom didn't get burned at all. So that is why I punched out the bottom and made it the top. One more pallet and about an hour worth of hot fire and it was pretty much gone. Remember....work smarter not harder. It is easy to just burn the hell out of the thing until the liner is gone. If there is some liner left after 3 HOT fires....then it is probably safe to assume it will not come off during its life of smoking, especially once you get is seasoned and get the black buildup on the interior surfaces. I say burn away and don't let the negative comments about the liner scare you off from trying.

Good Luck.
