Finally got some pics taken of the progress of Gunny. Will be looking to lock and load early this summer if all goes as planned.
Gunny Smoker Progress with Pics

The first order of business was to decide what type of smoker this was going to be. After taking into account my limited tools and metal skills I decided to adapt a simple vertical design with UDS similarities. So far so good and pics below.

Take a good hard look and some preliminary measurements:

A good hard power wash:

2 sets of badly rusted rails had to be ground out. 2 sets of rails and grate frames fabricated from tube stock and fit was good. Plate for heat deflector not yet drilled but cut to size and fit.

Floor plate dry fit also:

Exhaust damper made from 4 inch SS blast gate cut and dry fit:

All components being dry fit before permanent installation seems a reasonable course for me. I still need expanded metal on grates with tabs so they won’t tip when slid out and charcoal basket and ash pan.

That's going to be a dandy when you get it done, Rick! Looking forward to further progress.

Very nice shooter !!!!!

Man rick Thats gonna be a neat old smoker. Now it comes with an awful lot of history and I'm sure you are keeping as much of that as you can?? But it looks great and I cann't wait to see it in action soon enough.

Thanks everyone. I will be drilling the heat deflector this weekend if all goes well. I have no way of making 14 1.5 inch holes so after figuring the area of a 1.5 inch circle I will be substituting 32 1 inch holes by predrilling to half inch and using a step bit to the full one inch on a drill press. If anyone good at math check me out. T hanks.

Thanks to Mark the ash pan is fabricated and I have the coal baskets finished. I made 2 baskets out of heavy wire bakers baskets and they set side by side in the ashpan. Once I locate expanded metal for the grates at a reasonable price I will start permanant installation of the components. Hoping to finish with pics by the end of the month or so.

I'm just glad I can help and be a small part of this build. Your welcome and my pleasure.

Got any update pics, Rick?
Not yet Dutch.  I had planned on finishing this last weekend and the heat was indexed at 107F!  Not for me at those temps. LOL

This weekend was Sandy and I's 22 aniversary and I figured if I was gonna stand a chance at 23 I had better pay attention to her!

First decent weekend not boiling hot I will finish with pics and burn out.  All parts are fabbed no just need spot welding and door seals.

i really like the idea of the blast gate! what did that set ya back if ya dont mind me asking? i wonder if they can be found in regular steel?

I was able to snipe it on ebay for 20.00 plus 7.00 shipping.  If ya are not careful you will end up with galvanized gates so look closely at what ya are buying.  For reference a 4" round gate is about 14 sqr inches area.  For Gunny I need 12 Sq inches so it will be partially closed most of the time after start up by my calculations.  I am hoping to get a temp range of 120-375 F out of Gunny but that is ambitious.  Only way I think that will happen is by making high heat silicone door seals and using the side by side double coal baskets I have made from heavy wire bakers baskets.  The first burn will be high heat to burn out residues.  Then I will instal the thermo I have at top grate level and do a more controlled seasoning burn after the door seals are installed.

I am also knocking around the idea since I have the parts already of making a removable propane module so Gunny can be fueled with charcoal, wood chunks, or gas.
