I am building a upright, insulated smoker. I have never seen one of these units up close and personal so I am in need of  a little help here. It is going to be approximately 2 ft x 2 ft x 4 feet high. I have a propane burner that is 40,000BTU capable to mount in the bottom. I am going to use a steel mixing bowl for my smoking chips and a metal serving tray for water and the drippings. What I need to know is how far away from the top of the burner should the bottom of the chip bowl be so that it creates enough heat to get the chips smoking?

In looking at my GOSM, my cast iron wood box looks to be about 2 inches above the burner. If I were you, I would make my support rack adjustable so that I could fine tweak it to get the optimal performance out of it.  If the 2 inch space between pan and the burner isn't close enough to get a good smolder going, you could lower it down a bit. If it's to close and your chips catch fire, (has been known to happen) you could raise it up. When you find that perfect sweet spot you can then lock everything in.

That's a great idea to make it adjustable. What I am going to do is put three bars out from the sides @ 120 deg apart. I will drill and tap the bars perpendicular to the length of the bars. I will then put some all thread in there to raise and lower the wood chip bowl. Should work out nice. I will design it so 1" is the minimum and 3" is the maximum

I second the idea on making it adjustable because on my Smoke Shack I had to experiment with moving my chip pan further away from my flame because my chips were burning too fast.
