Its just another word for contest

Each month we here on SMF pick a certain menu item have a throwdown (above answered that one) then we summit our own dishes that we have made for the judges to judge only on site. But you can tell then how you prepared the dish. Then tho whole website gets to look at the dishes and we can vote on a winner. That's a throwdown and they are fun and you can make anything that you want to as long as it is smoked and has the main ingredient in the dish

What can possibly be the point of a cooking contest where none of the judges actually tastes any of the food?

What if I am a skilled photo chopper, what then?

It just don't make no darn sense when what makes any food good or bad is first and formost about how well it appeals to the senses of taste and smell. There is an element of eye appeal but it's a secondary one at most.

Have you ever seen someone pickup a menu, point to something and say " That looks good, I;m going to order that"? Some folks can visualize flavors and textures just by reading the components and seeing the end product. Don't be so qiuck to judge... most folks here have gone with the flow. It's all good my friend.

Yeah well unfortunately a lot of our elections are run the same damn way and just look where that's gotten us. LOL

I'm sure you've heard all of those old sayings like beauty is only skin deep, and looks are almost always deceiving. Need I go any further?

Besides most of the pictures of food you see in print are actually taken of food that is actually made from wax and all sorts of other inedible stuff then painted, sprayed etc. to look good. One bite and you'd be gagging and spitting it out. Look at the ice cubes in those whiskey adds with the glass dripping condensation. All plastic.

Here have a nice plate of ribs.

Its about creativity, originality, use of ingrediants.

Yes none of us can taste the food show but most of us know what our "pulled pork" etc, tastes like.

We imagine what it would taste like in the others presentation, and these throwdowns really help stir creative juices. They help people try new things and show how we can use our smokers for more than just the same old pork / beef. Sometimes they show us how to make them better!

No typically this would not win. Reason being that it looks too similar to the ribs we all can make. Now if you show pictures of you using crazy ingrediants / techniques maybe that would be interesting.

If you want to lie about taste and photoshop, then its really your loss. :D

So I take it you won't be entering any of our Throwdowns

Thats ok there are many who do and enjoy them. It also gives people a chance to think outside the box a little and try new things which they may not normally do. Personally I have not entered a Throwdown but I sure like looking at all the good stuff produced.

This is my last comment on your thread. The throwdowns were created as fun events, not a proficiency exam to a culinary institution, just fun

I understand that you have your opinion... and you have expressed it.
