Picked up a new chargiller bottom dump chimney and was wondering if anyone has tried seasoning a chimney to help prevent rust, seems logical since we season smokers to prevent rust.  Never tried before, wondering if it would  work, getting tired of buying new chimneys every couple years cause they keep rusting out.  Thinking of spraying them down with pam inside and out before I fill it up with coals..lol...doesn't matter if it catches fire, will be in the firebox ...lol...just a thought

Get a Weber chimney. Years worth of darn near constant use. I grill 2-5 times a week and mine has lasted well over two years. I'll post a pick if ya like.

What you want to do is like seasoning the exhaust cone of a turbine engine.. not going to work. Hot steel is more suseptible to oxidization and therefore rusts quicker, that's what makes oxyacetylene torches work. Build one out of stainless and you'll be fine (cannot cut stainless steel with a torch).

Get one that's galvanized and it will last a while longer than one made from mild steel.

Another vote for the Weber.  Like Al, mine is about 7 years old which is about where I used to have to replace the cheaper versions.

Given the heat in the chimney I can't see seasoning one?

Good luck and good smoking.

Now that I think about it, we have been in our current house for 3 1/2 years so mine is over four years old..

OK I guess once this Chargriller rust my next one will be a weber, thanks guys.  Does Weber make a bottom dump, because the only reason I got this one is the bottom dump feature, tired of all the ash flying around trying to dump it into my firebox, it's a little tight...lol...without some long gloves I lose some arm hair too, maybe going to have to give Al's chute idea a try, if I go back to a regular chimney (weber) lately been starting my coals in the firebox, takes forever to get a good bed going, which is why I went back to using a chimney

Not that I'm aware of. Wish they did though..

Try the chute, that looks like it moves the coals horizontally very well.

I have two of these, they are about 8 or 9 years old. Except for reattaching a handle with peanut screws on one of them I have had no problems.

I have often looked at the Weber chimneys, but until these burn out....who cares about a little rust, any way.

And yes I do stand in the rain holding an umbrella over the coals until they're lit.

My Weber has a secondary handle on it that makes it easier to flip it over, but haven't seen a bottom dump. Take a look at Al's photo, and you'll see it there--silver bar pointed to 2:00. Otherwise, get some welders' gloves, and rearrange coals by hand once dumped. Done it before I got the Weber.

I still do that, even with the Weber. Which, by the way, I have also he'd for about five years. Sure, the handle's a little melted these days but it's still going strong.
