Hey guys,

New to the forum so HELLO :)

I've been looking to purchase a cast iron dutch oven for use on campfires. Lodge seems to be the more popular brands. Wondering if anyone can share suggestions or any previous experience?

Lodge is a good starter and very common. I like my 10" DO for small meals, and my 14" for larger ones. A good all around pan is a 10". Lodge comes preseasoned and that will work as long as you take care of them. If you need to resets on there are numerous threads here.

  to SMF!

Glad to have you aboard!

At your leisure, would you swing by "Roll Call" and introduce yourself.

That way we can all give you a proper welcome!

I have several Lodge pans & as long as you take care of them they will last forever.

There are DOs that have legs and some that do not. The ones with the legs are what you want for cooking over coals and for stacking DOs. The ones without the legs can be used over coals as well as on propane / household stoves.

I would highly recommend some thick leather gloves and one of them lid lifting tools too!

Any feedback on the camp chefs?
One advantage of Lodge over Camp Chef, is the season that Lodge puts on their pans.  If you're new to seasoning cast iron that might be an asset.  I've used cast iron cookware for over 40 years, I might be bragging, but I've grabbed pans out of the scrap bin and cleaned them up, seasoned them and they looked like new.  Till you get used to working with, and seasoning cast iron, the Lodge seasoning could be your best friend.  Other than that Camp Chef make good pots and pans, for less money.

I have had no luck at all finding CI in garage sales.  Haven't given up though.
It's become almost impossible to find at Garage sales or on Craigslist anymore. Every once in a while I will find some, but most of the time its cheap stuff that people over price.
