Si I am looking at getting a Big Poppa build, the whole thing drum and all. Has anyone else done this and how much work is it to put together?

I haven't gotten it yet, but I am also going to use Big Poppa kit. I found a barrel at a local bakery that I will use. 10.00

Not to say don't do it but there's always the PBC(Pit Barrel Cooker) out there as well.
It would be less work to put together. I looked at them but went with a WSM for instant gratification!Thumbs Up

I recently put together a drum smoker using a kit from Big Poppa. I bought a new unlined barrel locally and bought the kit from Big Poppa that had the ash catcher with it. All you need is a drill and a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. Just take your time marking the holes with the templates that is in the kit, then drill the holes. After that burn some wood in it for several hours and get it good and hot. When it cools down dump the ashes and clean it out good. I then removed any paint that the heatl loosened up and sanded. I then taped up the holes from the inside of the barrel and sprayed the outside with high-temp paint. I then put the parts on the barrel and sprayed the inside with Pam cooking oil and filled the basket with charcoal and lit it to season the barrel and grill. It's really pretty simple it's just the drum prep that takes the most time. Somebody else may do it differently. I like mine so far.

I've used one for years, If i can dig out a couple of pics I'll show you a couple small improvements.   I rarely use it anymore but that isn't because it isn't a good cooker just that I made a different style I like better.  The BP is great for grilling/searing and reverse sears...that's where it shines. The adjustable level grate rocks.

How is it on long smokes?

It can be decent but still not as long as it could be if they had a larger coal basket. Make sure you put something like expanded steel on the bottom so the small pieces don't fall through and over load the basket when you want longer cooks.

Okay thanks for the advice!
