I like hoagie rolls but there is way too much bread so I hollow them out, and feed that to the birds.  I found a beef roast for $1.98/pound and ground it for burger meat, and added Montreal Steak seasoning for flavor. Hollowing out the rolls makes the filling the star of the sandwich, and heating makes the crust crisp and delicious.

The hoagie tops were filled with caramelized onion, while the bottoms filled with blue cheese.  Burger meat was shaped in the form of the roll.

I love the way Grill Grates cook - no flare ups, great heat distribution, and perfect grill marks.  Definitely one of the best additions to my gas grill.

The roll crust was crisp, the blue cheese melted and giving a perfect complement to the spice in the burger, and the caramelized onion imparting a subtle sweetness that made the sandwich perfect

Thanks Al!

Simple and keeps the missus happy - not the usual burger that we both love, so a little variation is always good!

Wow, really cool idea to hollow out the bread and make the patty a perfect fit.  I made tri tip sandwiches with the same ingredients.  Cant beat that combo of flavors!  Points for an original sandwich!!!

Looks good PZ.

I also use the Grill Grates, mostly the flat side. Like the way it browns the food completely. Also as you, I like using the Lodge Griddle, again the flat side.

Good eye, T! - the Lodge griddle fits perfectly over the two burners on the gas grill, and is definitely my "go-to" metal for cast iron sizzling.  I haven't used the flat side of the Grill Grates yet mostly because the missus likes to see the grill marks!

Excellent idea on using tri-tip, worktogthr!  I can't take credit for hollowing out the bread - first saw that on a TV show: Everyday Italian with Giada.

Thanks for the points!
Wow looks amazing
Thanks Weev - it's fun to try to come up with flavors that will make the family happy, and equally pleasant to see the looks on their faces!
Great idea. I should try it.
Thanks atomicsmoke - there are so many things I need to try that I;ve read about on this forum, I doubt I'll live long enough to do so!

Many thanks for the points, Richie!  It has been a while since I did blue burgers. One time I rolled out two thin patties and sandwiched the blue cheese between before cooking. That way I could load more cheese without loosing it as I would by topping the meat.  I've nearly lost my sense of smell which affects how I experience taste.  I tend to load all my cooks rather heavily with flavor which sometimes is too much for our guests.  However, the missus (best lady I ever met) goes with the flow and never complains.

Those are man sized sammies! point! B
Appreciate the point, BDSkelly!  Sandwiches are among my favorite things to eat because they are simple and tasty.

Super sammie! Definitely point worthy!

I don't know about hollowing out the buns though. I like my bread!

Great smoke, love the removal of excess bread, but I'll pass on the blue cheese personally.

Thanks, Disco!  As long as I have the missus happy, I'm happy.  She loves sandwiches because they are a quick meal on the run, and when we create something a bit more involved, she is in food heaven, which means I am too

... and thank you for the points!
I don't think is a "don't like bread" issue here...but "I like more meat/cheese on my bun". Or maybe the man went low carb :-)
That's true, atomicsmoke - I dearly love bread, and you made a good call - I did go low carb, and did want more room for the meat and goodies.  Sometimes the sandwich becomes so big, I can't get my mouth around it!  (PS: the low carb was not for me - it was for the missus

Thanks, b-one!

I used to hate blue cheese, but one day when I was really hungry I went into a Sizzler steak house and tried the blue cheese dressing on my salad. It was so mild I hardly noticed anything but a great flavor.  Ever since, I've been developing my taste buds, and now am hooked.  However, I have friends that cannot stand the look or taste so I always have an alternative for those guys.
