Hi I just ordered a Smoky Joe gold,to use mostly for grilling. OK here are the questions.

I would also like to build a Mini for small smokes, or maybe an overnight cook. Will the silver hold temps long enough for an overnight cook? Can the Smoky Joe gold be used for both?

I'v seen today the 32 qt imusa pots at Walmart. What esle would be needed?

Thanks Dan

The longest cook I have got out of my Mini-wsm is 14+ hours. In order to get that long of a smoke you will need a charcoal basket. I over fill the charcoal basket and used the side light method. I have the bottom fully cut out of the pot in order to achieve that.

You will need cooking grates

expanded metal to make basket

ash deflector if you don't add side vents.

for side vents you need two 34" ball valves and two black pipe nipples.

misc, nuts and bolts for grate supports

Hi All So basically I would just need the pot, SS screws and bolts for the grate.. I do have a charcoal basket, not sure if it fit it is 12" square. What about a diffuser?  I have my 2 Mavericks for temps. The mini would be great for small cooks, I do have a Shirley Patio for the bigger cooks.

Ball vavles are overkill..NO?

Thanks Dan

12"x12" is too big. Won't fit. To make the basket you use the charcoal grate that comes with the SMJ as the bottom of the basket. Then weld or wire tiethe expanded metal to the sides. The sides can only be 3 1/4" tall.

Ball valves are up to you. At the altitude I live at I need them for additional air flow. If you don't go with them then you will need to create an ash deflector to keep the lower vent from clogging with ash and snuffing the fire out.

Probably 90% of the time I use the steamer insert that comes with the tamale pot as a diffuser. Then when I feel the need I use a chunk of granite I have wrapped in foil. A 10" terra cotta planter tray work to.

yes Dan... it can be used both ways... ether a grill or put the pot on for a smoker.... Do some searching for the build.. you'll find many of them... a small pet foods dish will work for the ash cover over the vent...
