My son's baseball team is having cookout/party in July for the end of there season. I'm am in charge of getting all the meat for the burgers. There are 11 players and there parents plus 4 coaches.

How much ground beef should I need. Is 1/2 lb per person to much?

How many Burgers can your son eat,if he can eat 3, 4 oz burgers most likely the rest of the team could. Then the adults  I would say 20 pounds of burgers

Are you having a lot of food sides also? That would cut down some on the amount of burgers.

You could do some hot sausage sandwiches too. They are usually a big hit and easy to make.

I make 1/3 pound burgers when grilling for a group. That's plenty especially with sides. I always throw on a package or two of brats or dogs. Just in case there are those that don't like burgers.

Save some hassle and get ready made Patties. Figure two per person plus sides. My local store carries 5oz fresh or frozen 85/15 and they are great. A couple packs of Dogs is a good idea too...JJ

Thanks everyone! I like the 1/3 lb idea, I usually make 1/2 lb burgers at home but I think for the party 1/3 lb should be good. There will be plenty of other stuff as well so I'll figure on 1 burger per person plus dogs and brawts.

I'm with tropics on this one, Leftovers isn't a bad thing but folks being hungry SUCKS. And you never know if "Uncle Joe",  "Aunt Barbara" and some siblings may show up!

Bring some Zip-locs!

Make the burgers on the smaller sides and more of them, nothing like seeing a 1/3rd pound burger in the trash with a bite out of it.

I have learned over the years to expect the worst and hope for the best, and have lost some respect for the human race, I have seen pizza parties where a kid would grab 3 slices of pizza, eat half of the three slices and go back for more when there's still kids in line for their first piece and the parents see this. Gluttony really gets my goat!

You have a small crowd and this is probably not a problem...

Will you be serving or will you be putting everything out for folks to come up and take?

If you are serving, you have control over this, if it is a buffet style, that may be different.

If money isn't an issue, Overcook and take home the leftovers or send home some care packages with the other adults.

Believe it or not averaging is easier with larger numbers than smaller numbers, for meal planning, to an extent anyway, IMHO.
