I've searched around the forum and can't find the answer I'm looking for. Without purchasing another probe type thermometer,( I use my only one as a IT thermometer), has anyone drilled a hole in the door and inserted a analog type as a permanent thermometer? If so, what kind (brand) do you recommend?

I have changed/added analog therm to all my smokers. The best ones are Tel Tru. I use a titanium step drill. Here's a shot of my Smoke Vault with 2 in the door.

Hope this helps!

I purchased a good Tel-Tru analog thermometer for my MES. Since it is a 2" stem, would positioning it on the left side say...around middle rack area be a good location?

Personally I use Maverick ET-732 Digital Wireless with my MES units.

The variation in the temp from area to area is enough that I like to have my Smoker Therm near the Meat I'm smoking, and I can put my Maverick wherever I want it. Then the other probe can go right in the meat to measure the Internal Temp. Makes everything Easy & Accurate.

I still don't see an answer to my question.
I tried to answer it in a nice way by telling you what I do with my MES 40. (post #4 above)

If you want it more blunt, I'll tell you I would not drill any holes in my MES 40 to put a thermometer in it that would only measure the temp at the particular place you put it. The temp in an MES varies throughout (Left to right & Top to bottom & Front to back)

I use my Maverick ET-732 units, so I can get the actual accurate temp right where the meat is.

This is basically the same thing I said before, but that is my answer, and it is just my opinion after 7 years of experience using MES Units.

Using a digital wireless such as the ET-732 you can do what Bear stated which I underlined.  Very important.  Something you cannot do with an analog probe that is permanently mounted.
