Yea, Lycasin is just a trade name for the sugar alcohol sweetner substitute malitol. I'm not sure if Harribo has discontinued manufacturing the sugar free Gummi Bears, but major distributors such as
Amazon, Walgreens, CVS, etc. no longer stock them. Not a problem however as those distributors and many others continue to stock essentially the same product under the brand names of other manufacturers.
I asked my GI doc about the issue after after a friend of mine had an incident while munching on a bag of Gummi Bears at a stage play one evening. Not a pretty ending, but a hilarious one. The doc said that consuming around 40 grams of malitol in a relatively short period of time would essentially create "ignition", and that "liftoff" would occur at around 50 grams. Considering that the 5 lb. bag the commenters are referring to converts to about 2,270 grams, there's a very long and turbulent journey ahead.
