Sorry to beat this old horse but I'm new and the forum is vast and can't find what I'm looking for..

I just ordered 20 lbs of pellets..

What's the down side of not using a Mail Box with my 30" Master Built and just using pellets in the chip pan?

I have some perforated stainless steel and could make it into a tube or tray and add it to a lower rack for the pellets or line the wood chip pan..

I'm not sure what I could use pellets in the Chip Pan and or on a Lower Shelf with a Tray I made..

I have been using my electric smoker with store bought wood chips in pan..It doesn't get any smoked flavor and mighty as well cook in the over..

Should I just do the Mail Box Mod or can I get almost same results with pellets in smoker??

Thanks much for having such a great forum, found myself here several times before and finally joins :)

Other than the book telling not to use pellets in the MES chip tray, I think it would be cycles of too much smoke in between no smoke at all.

If you have a Tray that works as good as an Amazing Smoker "AMNPS", you don't need a mailbox mod, unless you have serious problems with air flow in your particular smoker.

Just noticed Wrong Forum :(

My smoker only has one 3/4" hole near the top back side for ventilation..

I can make and add dampers to the bottom and top, do you think these should be added?

That's hard to say, because every smoker is different.

However if you're saying you have a Masterbuilt Analog Smoker, it seems many of them had to drill holes at the bottom to get enough air flow going for an AMNPS to work properly.

I would see what you can do with what you got, and if you have problems, post a couple pics & questions. We can help you better then.

I would recommend NOT using pellets in the MES tray. I did this once and when I later pulled out the chip loader to check on the pellets, a blast of flames shot out. Fortunately my face wasn't close enough to get burned. I have only used the pellets in the AMZN ever since. Maybe what happened to me was a fluke, but I would not risk it. David.
