im in search of a used propane tank to build a smoker with. im looking for a 500 gallon and have called every place i can think of, and searched craigslist, and still come up empty handed. any ideas where i can get a hold of a tank? im located near flint but willing to drive for the right deal.

p.s. sorry if this isnt the right spot, didnt wanna post in a general nation wide area.

I think this is the right spot, but there aren't that many people here who would part with one if they had one. I suggest calling some of the mom and pop propane suppliers and letting them know that you would be interested in buying one for above scrap prices when they have to be decommissioned due to age or pressure test failure. Gary Propane in Oscoda and Propane Plus in Alpena come to mind. You might try some of the larger suppliers, but I suspect they have disposal policies that might be inflexible. Up in my area, the Amish sometimes buy propane tanks that can't be recertified and use them for compressed air to drive tools. Eventually, they become unsafe even for that, so they get scrapped unless someone buys for other purposes.
