I will be in the DFW area for a few days and would like to eat at a good BBQ restaurant. Any suggestions? Looking for a traditional and NOT touristy place. Please let me know what you recommend and why. Thanks!

Hello,

I will also be in the DFW area. Taking a training class in Fort Worth for work.

on my list of barbecue places to eat are:

Monday: lunch at Lockhart Smokehouse in Dallas (or Plano if I'm running a bit late getting into to town).

Wednesday: Dinner at Cousin's Barbecue in Fort Worth (the location on McCart Ave)

Friday: dinner at Pecan Lodge in the evening after my class ends and I'm on my way back to Oklahoma.

JCBigler,

I will check into those that you mentioned.  What have you heard of those restaurants and have you eaten there before?

Has anyone heard about Riscky's Barbeque?

Thanks!

With Lockhart and Pecan Lodge you've got two of the best in this area. I've never heard of Cousins. Risckys is a steakhouse. Also, you might want to try 3 Stacks, 4226 Preston Rd in Frisco. Would be third compared to Pecan Lodge and Lockhart, but very good brisket.

Thank!  I am looking forward to some good BBQ.  Any thoughts on what is the best thing to get off the menu?  Ribs, brisket, sausage or sandwich?

What part of DFW will you be in?  That will determine some more defined locations.

In Plano, Ten-50 BBQ is good, west of Frisco, Prairie House is pretty good too...

Hurst for the most part, but will be going into Dallas on one day.

In the Hurst area, there really isn't anything to get excited about. IMO, Riskys is just your run of the mill commercial bbq. In North Richland Hills there is Backforty Smokehouse, but again commercial BBQ. They use Southern Pride pits, which are basically gas powered BBQ ovens so the smoke flavor is really hit or miss depending on the day.

My recommendations for Tarrant county would be:

Coopers in the Stockyards

Hard 8 in Roanoake

Cousins at the original McCart location.

Jambo's BBQ Shack in Arlington. Jambo is Jamie Geer's place. He is the guy that builds the awesome cookers used by Tuffy Stone and Johnny Trigg to name a few.

Sammies on Belknap

Lockhart smokehouse and Pecan Lodge are awesome. The only drawback with Pecan Lodge is other than Friday and Saturday they close at 3pm, and they usually run out of BBQ way before that.

Thanks for all the help.  I plan to hit two of the following three.

Pecan Lodge

2702 Main St

Dallas, TX 75226

Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ

400 W Davis St

Dallas, TX 75208

Cousin's Bar-B-Q

Woodmont North

6262 McCart Ave

Fort Worth, TX 76133

Ok, here's the deal.

I ate at Cousin's last night. I wasn't that impressed. I'll post a bit more when I get a chance. Lockhart was very, very, very good. I expect Pecan Lodge to be just as good.

Thanks Justice, this is my first time for Texax BBQ and want to get a baseline on what is good and what to eat.

I made it to Lockhart's.  It was pretty good and the leftover brisket was pretty good the next day between some of the bread you get with the meal.  Thanks for everyone's help with this.  Now I know what Texas BBQ brisket is supposed to be like.  I will try it their way next time.  I usually slather sauce on in the end and also marinate it before cooking.  Next time, just a dry rub.

I've had good luck with Lockharts, but Hard 8 in Coppell is our favorite. I've actually altered my commute in the morning to drive past it, they fire up the pits before the sun comes up.

It gets a bit touristy but it's outstanding food
